I have DirecTV and I spit on Comcast.
I live in Dallas Texas, a pretty dry area so I don't get very many satellite outages. I also get a whole lot more channels than basic cable ever provides, and I don't get all those annoying cable outages.
The one problem I do have is that when it rains really hard I can get satellite problems. That is a rear event and a secure mount can help prevent the situation, but it is not a total fix. Other than that I prefer DirecTV 100:1 vs. cable.
If you live in Seattle Washington, one of the wettest cities in the US, then I wouldn't recommend a satellite system otherwise it is far more reliable than cable is. Your choices are better and you get about twice as many channels.

Satellite TV in general is better and cheaper then cable. All channels on satellite are broadcast in digital as opposed to only some channels being digital on cable. Digital provides a cleaner picture and better sound. Heavy rainfall can cause you to lose signal for a few minutes (rain fade). These type of storms are rare. You'll here stories about how satellite will go out on cloudy days or light rain. This is due to an improperly aligned dish or an obstruction blocking the signal. Get a good installer.
If you're going with standard definition receivers from DirecTV, you can look into a larger dish to lower the chance of rain fade. The standard 18" dish provided is the bare minimum. Using a 24" or even 30" dish reduces the chances of experiencing rain fade.

First, let's set the record straight on this rain thing. The sat can go out when it rains, but it has to be raining EXTREMELY hard for it to go out. I've been a subscriber for almost 10 years and can count on one hand the number of times the sat's gone out for more than a minute or two and I live in an area ingigenous to heavy thunderstorms.
The DTV customer service is outstanding and they have way more HD than anyone else.

DirecTV is great. Untill it rains....then you miss whatever it was you wanted to see. So, if you live in the desert, it rocks. If you live in an area where it rains even some of the time, you will really get to hate it.
