our dog had puppies 7 1/2 weeks ago. The puppy that we kept will not stop trying to nurse. The mom, Lady, i feel is just such a sweet dog that she does not try to stop them, but you can tell that she is getting annoyed. the puppy eats dry dog food as well, but whenever he is around lady he tries to nurse. is there anything that i can do to make him not want to nurse...other than having them apart from eachother all of the time.

i would really appreciate any advice.

i really dont need any lectures from any of you people telling me that i am a bad owner. i adopted our dog pregnant, and did a GOOD THING. so you should all back off ok? I wasnt the irresponsible one who didnt spay her and left her in the wild to get pregnant. the pups that are gone are in wonderful homes, my vet techs took them home. so just SHUT IT.

SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY. thanks.

She'll tell him when she is sick of it. If she still has milk and she has no problems, isn't sore and red.. the milk is goof for him. Once she is sick and tired of him, she'll tell him to bug off.. I suspect it'll be within the next week or so.

Geez....more pups with a bad start. Placing the puppies before 8 weeks did not offer them the proper start that they needed.
Please SPAY the mom. There is a lot to know about breeding so you can send emotionally and physically stable pups into the world.
And leave this one alone. The mothers JOB is to teach it!!!!

Just because you did let the dog get pregnant, doesn't mean that you could not learn something and know when the puppies should go!!! Didn't all the vet techs that took the puppies know that?????

When my dog had puppies we kept one of them and after all the other puppies had found homes she still tried to nurse and the mom wouldn't let her. So I think he should probably just stop after awhile. You can ask your vet if he keeps trying to nurse.

I have 11 week old pups that still "nurse" the mom. I really don't think they have any milk left but the pups still try.....lol I let my moms decide when to wean the pups.
