I, too, was spanked as a child. I also turned out fine. I fully intend on spanking my son if he gets too out of line. However, I will exhaust every other possibility before I do it. Saying No, time outs, taking toys away. If he's still doing something I don't allow, then he will get a swat on the hand or on the butt. I will NEVER hit my child in the face though. Spanking works for some parents and for others it does not. You just have to do what is best for you and your family.

spankings HURT!!

guess that might be considered a "pro" or a "con", depending on the point of view.

A spanking makes my butt smart.
I'd sure consider that a "con".
But when my butt smarts, then I smarten up very quickly.
Guess the folks consider that as a "pro".

You think spanking "is totally wrong"?
I guess punishment is necessary occasionally.
And there are worse things than being spanked.

I was spanked once as a child, and because that was all it took, after that I knew my parents ment business. I turned out fine, I'm not a violent person, I don't hate my parents for it, and I'm not embarassed by it. The people who are against spanking don't know how to draw the line between actual abuse and a simple swat on the butt. There is a HUGE difference between beating a child and actually abusing them, and just a simple swat to show them discipline. There are people out there who think yelling is abuse! Even some people who think that if you don't let your child do what they want, then thats abuse because they think your keeping your child from being independent which is ridiculous!

After coming back and reading more answers to this question, people still do not get it. When I got spanked, I was not afraid of my parents. I knew there were consequences for what I had done. As for people saying they got hit with a belt and got left with welts, well see there ya go, you dont know where to draw the line of actual abuse. Actual abuse is leaving bruises, any type of mark, bleeding, or hitting with a closed fist. Obviously a lot of people do not know what a spank is. A spank is a simple swat on the bottom. It's not slapping their bottom till they scream bloody murder or until you've left an imprint of your hand on the child. A real spank is a stern swat on the butt to show they did wrong.

Before ecomin a parent I believed that reasoning with your child would work everytime I have since learned differently. I believe that a spanking if absolutely nessacary is ok as long as it is a spanking not an attack. DCF at least here says a spanking on the bottom or a light tap on the hand is acceptable further actions are abuse or considered excessive discipline. While I hardly ever spank my children I find that often times one is needed to stress mommys point that the behavior will not be tolerated.

Spank them. Show them there is a price to pay for incorrect actions. I do spank my kids, but it is rare, as they do not enjoy it. If the schools can paddle, I can spank my own kids.

I totally believe in spanking, i was spanked, I am a good person, my kids were spanked - they turned out to be great adults - my step son is not and he is a BULLY to other kids. I think spanking would help my step son big time!

Abuse has decreased dramatically since spanking became less acceptable. There is always the chance that a parent will get out of control when spanking. I was raised in the 50s. I was spanked with a leather belt that left welts and bruises. My dad did the spanking. He thought that that's what good parents did. For that very reason, I could never bring myself to spank my children. (They did receive an occasional swat on the butt, for things like running into the street, etc) It is harder to control children today without corporal punishment- but- it is not worth the chance that some child will be injured. There are some very good books out there about alternative methods of controlling your child.

Spanking is a very effective disciplinary tool when used correctly. The thing to remember is that it is only one tool in the parenting toolbox. If it is only used when needed along with the other tools in the box, then it works very well.

I don't want to get into a debate here, but I was spanked as a kid also. And, my husband and I spanked our kids. I believe we are all well-adjusted and happy. By the way I have a great relationship with my dad (my mom has passed away, but we got along great), and our children are still very close to us (they are grown).
