Join the rest of us. Most people who read the Bible several times STILL don't understand it... I guess that's why they still are reading it.
As for what is to be learned? That mostly depends on what your religious beliefs are. Bible scholars would tell you it's not just a history of God's dealings with man, but a source where one get gain knowledge of oneself, relation between you and God, or how to find meaning and peace in your life.
So whatever you belief, it's safe to say that the Bible is more than just another book out there. Many, many persons have learned how to be a better person, spouse, neighbor, or co-worker. The Bible is what you get out of it and how you apply it in your life. I wish you the best....

Read a single event, then pause, analyze and find an answer.

For example,
Roman soldiers put a crown of hawthorn on Jesus' head. Hawthorn is medical herb for healing heart disease.

There was a big earthquake immediately after Christ died.
This can mean the big earthquake maybe occur whenever something very bad happen to a holy person.
etc.

What version are you reading? Try one that is in modern day language to have it make more sense.

The Bible helps us to understand God's nature and our own.

The Bible is our blueprint on how we should live our lives. Not selfishly, but for God and other people.

All of us long for something deeper than ourselves. We are all made to have a relationship with God. To often people try to fill this longing with things, drugs, alcohol etc. These things never work.

Try reading James. It is short and very good.

You need to find a church and get into a Bible study to learn from it. There is more to learn from the Bible than history.
