Perth and Cairns have entirely different climates. Perth has hot dry summers and cool wet winters. It has good beaches, both surf beaches and riverside beaches. The water in the sea can often be quite cold due to the southerly West Australian Current. Perth is a large city with all the amenities you would expect in a large city.

Cairns is tropical with mild to warm, mainly dry winters and warm to very warm wet summers. It can also get tropical cyclones (hurricanes) in the wet season. It is very much smaller than Perth, it is smaller than Townsville to the south of Cairns. It has beautiful mudflats which are a magnet for migratory birds but no beaches. You need to go north or south of Cairns for beaches but there is no surf worth speaking of. Cairns is still a beautiful city with many attractions.

Just about all towns in Australia have caravan parks but you would not want to be in a caravan in Cairms in the wet season. The very popular sites close to the main tourist attractions are the most expensive but you will find good, less expensive sites further out of town. Google caravan sites in Perth or Cairns to see what is on offer.
