My beagle is very vocal--from welcoming us home to just asking for a hug she has a noise for everything. We think it's cute (as long as she doesn't start howling) but I was just wondering, none of the other dogs I've seen are like this, is it a beagle thing or does it vary from dog to dog?

It is a hound trait! I had a beagle named Otis who was crazy! He would howl and bark whenever he was happy, excited, hungry, etc. When I would go away for just an hour,he would go crazy barking, crying, howling and baying and licking my face like I'd been gone for years! I had one called Wheezer who had a wheezy howl;that's how he got his name.He was a real sweetheart and like to bark as well. I miss them so much;I actually like to hear hounds bay and howl out of happiness.Arrooooooo!!!

It's a beagle thing. Beagles are hounds specifically bred to "bay" noisily to alert hunters to their prey. They have a wide range of sounds for various occasions, the most notable is the baying or howling of course, but they are known for always being very talkative.

Beagles are from the hound type (dogs bred for hunting) . Its is a beagles trait and a way of communicating with their pack.

Beagles LOVE to howl. We had a beagle for only a few months and mom couldn't stand it.
