do you really need to add the element of 'faith' i order to support the evidence, the evidence can't be that strong then.

In my experience, no. They're pretty close-minded about what they believe. They're right, you're wrong, and that's that.

NOTHING, let them wait and see their precious rapture for some, or second coming for others comes and goes generation after generation then one day it will hit, hey it never happened just like Haley's Comet did not cause world wide famine and death as predicted and other such hocus pocus.

MOST have shutters on their eyes that are locked shut and refuse to be open and objective to other possibilities or ideas.

I was born baptist and became agnostic at a young age and am more like my ancestors Native Americans in their beleifs more so than any other, the Earth and what it provides us is all i need for faith and comfort, I am not scared of death and am not worried about an after life because of it. I cant be worried about something that is not going to happen to me and I feel sorry for all these people who think that the world is going to end or a rapture or what ever devastation, what happened to the positive and goodness rather than all this we are gonna burn or not be chosen crap? So one sided.

So sorry to say very few will ever open their eyes and be objective. i don't care or wish to convert or change anyone, but I do want them to respect me and not try and convert me in return. We all have the right to choose our own beliefs but it seems here in yahoo land the zealots love to thumb anyone down who does not follow their faith and we have all seen it too and some christians have even apologized for their brethren they feel so saddened at their behavior.

Also our side does its share of bashing back, I say it is kids doing most of it and us adults have to stop letting them get to us and cause stress, we are adults they are not so we have to set the example, not them!

Just my thoughts on it. Good luck with your venture though!

I suppose one must know what "objective" is first

"undistorted by emotion or personal bias; based on observable phenomena; "an objective appraisal"; "objective evidence"

that being said, most religions, especially charismatic or evangelical types are "saved" not by reason but by emotion and hype....not sure if it will be easy to do

being objective and rational in what tends to be a delusional religion with no way of proving individual revelation and perspective to be the one and only truth will indeed be a miracle if it happens

I don't think you can, I was a christian and the truth overwhelmed me. It can be shocking when you realize that everything you thought you knew is all a lie. It is like when you discover there is no Santa, you then think how could I have believed that in the first place, it's all so clear to me now.

The difference is that the people who tell you about Santa know it's not real, the people that tell you about Jesus are convinced they know the truth even if it's based on irrationality.

I think we all can help each other become more objective by being more objective ourselves. See things from the perspective of others. If you are an atheist talking to a Christian, try to understand their perspective. If you are a Christian talking to an atheist...likewise. Otherwise it's just a meeting of close-minded people and no one gets anywhere.

You can't help if they don't want to be helped any more than they can help you if you don't want to be helped. Opening the doors to communication depend on the person's will and whether they want the information or not. If you have some great truth to impart, but the person you're talking to isn't interested, then what?

We cannot, and it is really not our business.

All the deprogramming that went on in the 70's and 80's did a lot of harm as well as good. I think its best to leave them to their fantasies, our main concern should be to make sure they do not insinuate these beliefs into the real world. Government, education etc.

Alright!! Another opportunity to acquire numerous thumbs down for restating truth. Yes!
My faith is based upon evidence. That evidence is as solid when of a spiritual nature as when of a physical type. Discounting one type of evidence yields only partial understanding of truth and many times leads to improper conclusions.
Dating an item, such as a written work, requires evaluation of historical evidence.
Determining the validity of someone's claims requires faith and many times the inclusion of physical evidence.
Faith is superior to opinion because opinion is based upon speculation. To the mind that seeks only physical proof the spiritual is discounted and leaves much room for speculation.

Edit:
Faith is not being used to support the evidence. Faith is there because of the evidence. God makes Himself known in the heart of man. Those who recognize that evidence develop faith in Him. When Jesus was asked by his disciples to increase their faith he told them a parable, giving them more evidence for their faith to grow upon.
The widely held misconception is that faith is a mysterious substance that can be "called upon" or "released" in order to do great things. Faith is nothing more than acceptance of the validity of Christ to make claims about himself. You either believe in his total honesty or you do not. My conviction that he is who he claims to be grows with each attempt to discredit him, for none have been successful in that attempt.

actually...

i've spent a great deal of time researching the validity of the scriptures and ancient oral history. i think i've been about as objective as i can be about believing what i believe. my research, coupled with my own personal experience (and yes, i do know that experience is subjective) gives me pretty good reason to believe as i do. after all, i can't believe that a book contains the truth just because it says so.

By asking really intelligent questions that make us research our religions, our doctrines, our Bibles. Usually I learn quite a bit when I am challenged.

The atheist guys who just ridicule, really serve no purpose, but to make me act illogical in return.
