Wikipedia says:
Introduced on July 5, 1937, the name "SPAM" was chosen in the 1930s when the product, whose original name was far less memorable (Hormel Spiced Ham), began to lose market share. The name was chosen from multiple entries in a naming contest. A Hormel official once stated that the original meaning of the name SPAM was "Shoulder of Pork and hAM". According to writer Marguerite Patten in SPAM – The Cookbook, the name was suggested by Kenneth Daigneau, an actor and the brother of a Hormel vice president. At one time, the official explanation may have been that the name was a syllabic abbreviation of "SPiced hAM", but on their official website, Hormel denies this and states that "SPAM is just that. SPAM." The fact that the originator was given a $100 prize for coming up with the name, however, still appears on the site's SPAM FAQs. [3]

What about veggies? Fruit? Beans? Salad? Nuts? Surely they have things like THAT where you live, meaning it's easy enough to be vegetarian. I don't eat those soy "meats" beause to me, they remind me of real meats, which just disgusts me. So I don't buy them. I still consider myself healthy. I do pay attention to nutrients I may not be getting while not eating meat regularly, and I'm doing fine. It's VERY easy to be vegetarian. Even easier than being an omnivore, if that makes any sense. You just need to educate yourself a bit more.

Soy curd or "tofu" is disgusting to me also. Although I did have one friend who fried it a way that I loved. There are other alternatives to meats..... Mushrooms (my fav) Nuts Seeds If you are at someplace that serves meats, they usually will serve veggies too. Just eat more veggies, or ask for a baked potato instead of a piece of meat. Fried, baked, or sauteed mushrooms are really good instead of meat. As for what to eat in the morning, well, all I can think of is cereal or granola.

"SPiced hAM". It was very inexpensive during WWII and lots of times it was the only meat people could afford, but, like everything else, it has gotten expensive. It's not something I would want a steady diet of, but every once in a while I do get a craving for a fried SPAM "sammich". Sort of the same way one gets a craving for those tiny little grease bomb hamburgers...Krystals.

I was always told it stood for "synthetic product animal meat". I know, "animal meat" is not synthetic, but SPAM sure is!

Ask a Minnesotan, where it originated! It stands for side pork and meat.
I stand corrected. It IS shoulder pork and meat. My apologies; See what I get for wanting to be first to answer?
