sure is! I live very comfortably off 40k. I have no children though.
Very true to the other comments...thats an important aspect.
I live in Houston, Texas where the cost of living is low.

If you are single, have a college degree but nothing higher than a bachlors, and dont' live in a ridiculously high-cost area like southern california or New York City, then it is a pretty good starting salary.

Depends on the cost of living where you reside.
On 40K a year, you'd be rich in Minot, ND. You'd barely scrape by in Phoenix, AZ. You'd be nearly, if not completely, homeless in San Francisco, CA.

Depends on where you live. $40,000/yr, you can live like a king in some place and just keeping your head above water in others.

It depends on what you do for a living, where you live and how long you have been with the company. Some places it's great other places not so great.

No not really it will only be enough for the basics like food and bills and occasionally sum enjoyment.

depends on the location you are in...your marital status...if you have children. what kind of expeses you have. but all in all...40k is great!
