I NEVER thought the day would come when I would buy Hill's Prescription diet from my vet...... My 14 y.o. shih tzu has been having GI problems to include diarrhea and a variety of other GI issues.
Vet said rice and all that. Well, low and behold MY dog wouldn't you know it won't eat rice of any kind, white or brown, real rice cooked soft or even minute rice. He is a fussy boy but he's my angel. Soo......... I bought a half case of the canned i/d. The vet and I thought of all kinds of things for him to eat but it was a no go with him. Never heard of a dog that won't eat rice.

He does eat the i/d just great and loves it and he has had not one GI upset or problem since starting it and his bowels are fine and his poop is fine.

But I hate supporting Hill's. Will continue to do so until I can find a better brand for GI sensitive dogs.
Do you know of any better brands specifically for dogs with sensitive GI systems?

KimbeeJ,
I paid $78.48 for a case of 24 13oz. cans. If that's a "reduced markup" I'd hate to see the regular markup price. That's 3.27 a can.

There were many Hill's products over the counter recalled but only one prescription product and it was a cat food. But I won't ever trust them again.

There were not any Purina or Pedigree products recalled at all.

This speaks volumes to me as I won't allow menu foods and other manufacturers to poison my dog.

VetTech,
Thanks for the information about it being a bland diet and needing supplements. I appreciate your answer and I'm going to try doing the rice in freshly made chicken broth. Boil the chicken and then use the water for the rice, great idea.

Hills i/d prescription food is nothing more than a bland diet. Vets prescribe it to those dogs with diarrhea, vomiting, after surgery, etc.

I know you mentioned that your dog hates rice. Have you tried to boil the rice with chicken or hamburg (the rice will retain the flavor of the meat)?

A bland diet consists of either boiled chicken and rice or boiled hamberg and rice. Please know that this diet is not nutritional enough for your dog, you should supplement with vitamins. I recommend the same thing for clients who for one reason or another need to keep their dogs on i/d long-term.

I do know that some holistic brands will sell a food for better digestion (like Timberwolf Organics), however... the diet is far from "bland".

If your vet recommends a bland diet either stick to the i/d or cook (as much as you hate Hills/Science Diet).

I'm sure rival dog food companies are the ones responsible for starting the "Hill's is terrible food" thing, but in reality they have many many years of science behind them and are dedicated to animal health and nutrition. There is nothing wrong with using their food, especially the prescription foods as needed. And contrary to some opinion, vet's do NOT get money or other kickbacks from Hill's. In fact, we carry it to provide a service for our clients and it is sold at a reduced markup. Royal Canin and Purina (EN) both make veterinary diets as well. Your vet or another may carry one of these.

Did you check the Canidae Canned.. We don't feed it to the dogs but will give some to mom after she has had pups to make sure she gets eating.. The dogs go freaky for it.

Royal Canin makes prescription diets. I think the quality is a bit better than Hills. Below is a link to their GI sensitive diet.
