Always always always get the insurance. Not only does it protect you if your in an accident but it also protects you in the event of theft. my brother rented a car when he went to Florida. while he was at the hotel someone broke in to the rental popped the trunk and stole his laptop. If he did not have the insurance on the car, he would have not been able to get the replacement cost for the laptop. ALWAYS!!! get the insurance. Also make sure you completely understand what it covers.

Check with your insurance co., if you have full coverage on your personal auto, then that coverage would extend to the rental. The only thing you insurance may not cover would be loss of use or loss of revenue (same thing). Basically, if your rental car is damaged or totaled, the rental company can chose to charge you thier daily rate while the vehicle is being repaired or replaced.

In general - the collision and comprehensive coverage that protect your private auto will also protect the rental car so you do not need to purchase the damage waiver. But it can vary from state to state and from policy to policy. Check with your agent.

Check with your insurance to see if you are covered. Also, using a gold or platinum card often has certain benefits regarding coverage. Consumer Reports says not to buy it.
