I think the use of the word MILITARY in your question is the give away....they all have the potential for going to war. Unless you mean the French military. They excel at surrender.

Every branch of the military goes to war. Some branches are more involved than others depending on the type of war and the objectives the government wants to achieve. If a war is just beginning such as in the Gulf War, the Air Force, Navy, and even the Coast Guard play a huge role in "softening up" the enemy to prepare for the ground forces. The Coast Guard aids the operations by working to make the waters safe for the Navy and Air Force to launch their attacks. The ground forces consist of mainly the Marines and Army but can also include troops from the Air Force (for air lifts of troops) and Navy (for Corpsmen, doctors, and clergy for the Marines). If you are looking for a branch of service to join and not have to see action, make sure you get a commitment from the branch for you to get a non deployable type job. However, those type jobs don't come easily and you have to score very high on the ASVAB test you take before joining. Do not under any circumstances join the Marines if you want to be absolutely sure you won't get sent into action. No matter what MOS you choose in the Marines, every Marine is a rifleman and can be pressed into infantry service at any time. That is exactly what happened to my son. He joined with an MOS in Artillery and since there is no pressing need for cannoneers in Iraq, they put his entire battery into MP duty for his present deployment in Iraq.

All of the military forces go to war. The Coast Guard becomes under the control of the Navy and they take their little dingeys out to sea.
