If a person is homosexual in orientation but is celibate is he living in sin? If he cannot change his orientation but lives a celibate life I'd think he was doing ok.

I believe people are born into the homosexual orientation. Therefor he is not living in sin until he commits a homosexual act. If he lives a truly celibate life then bravo . But if he sometimes falls but repents and keeps striving for celibacy then God will forgive . It is not the unpardonable sin. It is written that if you really , really try then God considers it perfect even though you fail. In most instances we are born into what we have earned.

The whole orientation alone thing doesn't make much sense to me. If you claim to be something but not live up to those claims? If you say you have homosexual orientation but you do not commit homosexual acts you are NOT a homosexual.

Well, I personally believe "orientation" is a matter of choice, on some levels at least. But yes, the sin, is not having bad thoughts pop up, but dwelling on them, encouraging them, and certainly acting on them.

Example, my brother's are married, though not Christians.

One is currently living with his mistriss.

The other, might very well get impulses to cheat, but so far as I know he hasn't.

Temptation (or orientation) is not a sin. All christians struggle with temptations of various kinds. We don't get to pick what we struggle with. So no people do not "choose" to struggle with homosexuality. Just like other people don't choose to struggle with all kinds of other things. But we do have a choice to try to line up our life with the word of God as much as possible. We strive to renew our mind and "take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ" (2 Corinthians 10:5)

It is the act that is a sin. However, it is good to try to get our minds to line up with our actions as much as possible. This can take a lot of practice and preseverance. For some people a certain degree of temptation remains.

People who struggle with homosexuality have the same problem as all six billion people on the planet - sin. We just don't all struggle with the same thing. I have been friends with many christians that this was a struggle for them. In my experience christians that struggle with this are not shunned or hated as the media portrays it. They are loved like everyone else and must get a grip on their sin like everyone else. Good luck my friend. I understand the struggle and am in a similar (but slightly different) battle myself.

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church...

2358
The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God's will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord's Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.

2359
Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection.

Neither one is a sin, I believe it to me morally neither good nor bad. Neutral. I don't think being celibate was God's plan for anyone, because God wouldn't create sex and make it so enjoyable to begin with if he didn't want us to enjoy it to the fullest.

according to the word of the old testament its the acts of homosexual male acts that are against the rules.

it doesn't actually specify about the orientation. .... it would n't be rational. as homosexuality is a natural variation.

Who are we to say how someone lives their life behind closed doors. As long as no one is being hurt, such as children, it is no ones business but their's and so I think it's time the religious world kept its nose out of others lives.

We all are sinful regardless of orientation. Trying to avoid sinful acts is what Jesus did ask of us.
