Aircraft paint= wide subject.
The new paint's are high solids( low solvents). These last longer then the stuff they used some 20 years ago. Also a little better for the enviorment. Typically you get 5 to 7 years of service before needing another paint. Some paints last 10 years.
Educated guesses, Total strip down and repaint of a 747 is around $150,000.( This not counting the days the aircraft is out of service) and increase the empty weight by 400-700 pounds
A 737 will be around $30,000 and increase the empty weight by 200-300 pounds.
To paint an aircraft you need an enviorment where you can seal it off and control the temprature. Also they need to meet regulations. In Los Angeles county for example you need to have an approved filtration system.

You are asking a multi part question regarding some extremes in size and quantity of paint. Each airline has a distinctive paint scheme and the quantity depends on the size of the plane. American Airlines actually uses very little paint on their aircraft. They have a polished clad exterior with a couple stripes down the sides and their logo on the tail. I would say the maximum weight of a complete paint job on a 747 would be well under 1000 pounds.

rWhen I painted C-5s for Lockheed-Martin, a scuff and sand paint job, with one coat of primer and a top coat used approx. 700 gallons of paint. After waste the paint job weighed about 4000-4300 lbs. Each aircraft was weighed after being painted.
This is similar in size to a 747.
Most large aircraft can be painted twice before they are stripped to bare metal for a complete paint job. Military aircraft are typically painted every five years during depot maintenance. Touch ups in between are usually limited to less than 10% of the surface area at a time.
Smaller aircraft are stipped to bare metal each paint job.
Cost for top coat, $800K, complete strip and paint $1.3 Mil. A lot of this cost is for hazardous waste disposal.
