Gay or lesbian unions are not legally recognised in Ireland. Sorry.
Trouble understanding the accents? You might initially.
Yes, there are places where it is really as it looks on the telly, and then some.
Great things about Ireland:
People are largely very friendly.
People are learning about decent coffee!!!!!
There's no smoking in workplaces (including bars and restaurants).
The place is a hotbed of the arts, and artists can help tax exemption here (but it isn't automatic).
Still lots of rural areas.
Some not so great things:
Some people are still old-fashion in their outlook and very suspicious of 'alternative' lifestyles, so if you do come visit (which I would strongly recommend before actually committing to live here), you and your partner should be discreet.
The cost of living is going through the roof.
The infrastructure is still way behind, especially in the west of Ireland. I rely on wireless broadband because there won't be cable broadband in my area for a very long time.
Drugs both legal and illegal are become something of an epidemic.

Gay marriage is legal only in Northern Ireland. You can have a civil union here. You will have no trouble understanding the accents here....like anywhere...you will get used to them in a few weeks...jsut ask people to speak slowly. Us Irish people do know our accents are touogh. Ireland really is quite rural...in paticular Northern Ireland. The republic of Ireland is quite overdeveloped in areas and the north is gettting like that but there are still mant beautiful and peaceful coastal areas. The best thing about Ireland is the people....we are a friendly bunch and will make you feel at home...its a very social environment too. The weather takes a little getting used to and it is expensive to live here but its a great place!

Yeah well, it is sex obsessed, basically everything is about sex but, the Catholic church.... it's really something you shouldn't want to discuss... The church... is an infuriating set up of whatever the hell it is. The fact that the church says "Yes we know you are BORN gay and you cannot help how you feel, that is not a sin- however if you act upon it, you are a sinner" is....what the hell is that? I don't even know- it's contradictory on so many levels and hypocritical as well... I don't get it. However, this is something you will not win, an argument you will never win. Eventually, if politicians aren't Christian or strongly at that or whatever, if they have the views at all, they may go against it, which is why religion and law should never really intertwine, it will always turn into some religious belief war between the parties and the attitudes of the people. Hopefully it will be legalised and soon at that, we're doing it up here in the north, my uncle is actually getting married soon and I'm pretty excited about that, but don't worry, it's something you cannot win, just, know your own feelings on it, and possibly, as hard as it is, accept that others don't agree with it- harmony should be kept to an extent at least... Good luck... :)
