It is not bad to stand in front of a microwave that does not have physical damage. Look at your microwave. See the pattern of holes across the glass window? the reason that those are there is that microwaves have a higher amplitude (height of wave) than the size of these holes. There for the wave can not pass through and you are safe.

It would be, if you managed to make it work with the door wide open! Luckily, there's an interlock switch that prevents that. A microwave oven has a full metal case, except for the door, which has a metal mesh as part of its structure, the holes of which are under 1/4 wavelength of the radiation. It cannot pass through, but having the mesh allows you to see inside when food is cooking. The gap between the door and the body is also physically too small for radiation to pass through.

some people think the microwave radiation used to kill the food (it's a light at a frequency you can't see) might be dangerous, but the door is made to protect you and it isn't that harmful

a better question is: why do you wear a lead apron when you get an X-ray, and it is so the rest of your body doesn't get any X-ray radiation, which could be harmful if you get a lot of X-rays

Today they're pretty well shielded against leaking electromagnetic radiation.

aside from boredom, there really isn't much risk. you should never go very far from your microwave when it's working, lest it catch fire when you're not around to put it out.

It's not bad unless you have something in it that you shouldn't, (like a pet).
