Man wish have more than one wife selfish, selfish man. Think only of self; make women have to compete for his attention, make some subservient; make some dominant. God wants all people to live up to their highest potentials as 100% well rounded people... not have some be lord over them or to have certain social or cultural ways to rule them. Jesus came to set people free from bonds like those. Man who have more than one wife gives himself much more trouble to worry about, too. He puts himself in a position of serious trust and dependency. A healthier way to live is to be equal with one spouse with both being dedicated to each other in harmony with all the gifts and talents each has to offer the relationship and the duties of life long marriage for the sake of stable children who also will grow up to respect their fortitude, the faith in each other, the ability to grow each one to be who God meant them to be, to encourage each one to live up to the potentials within.
Edit: As far as being good for mankind; perhaps in the olden, olden ancient times when primitive man lived more like animals such a configuration for family worked to protect the clan, but in the civilized world this way is no longer needed - it's time to step up to the serious plate of monogamy.

It's not at all good for mankind. There would be about a 50/50 ratio of men to women if no one took any measures to pick the sex of their child.
How would a polygamous society work? There would be men without women and they would be very unhappy.
As it is China and India have a growing population of men that will not be able to find a woman. That's a problem.
Besides polygamy is not what women prefer. So, good luck finding women to agree to this.

Many women and specially widows never get married. They will also have some one to take care of them. They will have a life if some married men marry some of them also.
Today in west why single girls try to steal married men with wife and children? Because they can not find men who can support them. They date with saveral single men and get tired of the young but free loaders with no income. So they want married men with good income.
After world war, there were few German men left alive. Widows and even single girls couldn't find husband. Lots of women had no choice but to resort to prostitution to survive. This is miserable life for women.
In war between Iran and Iraq in eighties about million Iraaians were killed and that many widows and single women could not get married. Married women allowed their husbands and most married men married them to take care of them.
Islam does not recommend to have more than one wife but allows more than one wives if there is a need. They know that if they abondon any wife or not treat any of them equal to other wives, they will be answerable to God on the Day of Judgment and may be punished for being unjust. marrying additional wife is a heavy burden. Those who understand the consequences fear Allah and do not marry more than one unless they are sure that they can be just to all.
Except few Arab countries most men in other Muslim countries strict to one wife like Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh etc. etc.
It is sin for men to have a wife and sleeping around also with other women without any responsibility of fathering the children from them. Even worst is when they exploit widows and turn them into prostitutes.
Women who are against more than one wives should think what if they are in similar situation like the widows of dead soldiers are in.

The family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. At certain times and for His specific purposes, God, through His prophets, has directed the practice of plural marriage (sometimes called polygamy), which means one man having more than one living wife at the same time.
The Bible indicates that Abraham, Jacob, and others of the Lord’s servants had multiple wives. One reason given by the Lord for plural marriage is mentioned in the scriptures: “If I will, saith the Lord of Hosts, raise up seed unto me, I will command my people; otherwise they shall [have only one wife]”

I could think of a few modern-day reasons why it may be good for a man, but I won't go into that.

The men who went around and fought wars, were lucky to remain alive, the number of widows were too much, so they decided to help and solve the problem of having to live alone and fend for themsleves.
Its good to have four wives, for the reasons quoted in the Holy Quran, and the husband has to share every thing he has equally with these four wives.
Variety is a spice of life, this wil also keep this man off the vice around today

I personally think so he can really procreate, look at the mormons they have a crap load of kids. I dont think being a bigamist is great for mankind, people feel jealousy and i feel some woman wouldnt appreciate there husband sleeping with a bunch of other woman.

No, it's not good for mankind. It helps to create a hell of a tax burden on the rest of us who do not support such practices, and drains our cash flow through increased taxation to fund the welfare rolls for people who engage in such pathetic practices.

With more than one Wife each wife has less to do. Unless of course its the new style of marriage you are speaking of. Where the kids suffer because no one is home.
