The idea is to bring the breath into awareness as a feeling and let any thoughts come and go like clouds in the sky, after a few mins of watching the breath without influencing it extend it to being aware of the whole body and any patterns of feelings in hands, feet etc, 10 mins is fine.
It's not about stopping thoughts it's about being with them if they arise and viewing them with no intent to enter deeper into them, regard them as just mental events that pass in the breeze. Each time bringing the awareness gently back to the breath as though it's the first time, never set goals on it as it will fail.
Another good way is mindfull activity, when brushing teeth, bring awareness to the feelings of the activity only, feel the brush in your hand, feel it on the teeth, feel the coolness of the water etc anything can be done mindfully, walking, hoovering...
You can't stop thoughts but you can learn to surf the waves...

When I learn meditation I was taking a martial arts class from Sifu Gate Chan. Gate taught some techniques to enhance your "chi gung".
Siting in a lotus position you make sure you back is perfectly straight. You touch the top of your tongue to the roof of your mouth and fold you hands in your lap palms up thumbs touching. (If you can't sit in a lotus position you can just fold you legs under you with your rear resting on your feet.)
Make sure the top of your head is the highest point... don't look down or up so that the back of your head or your forehead is the highest point.)
Imaging a ball of energy in the center of your abdomen, another smaller ball in the top of your head, a beam of energy connects the two balls. This beam has to be perpendicular the the ground. Now clear your mind and you will start to feel as though you fill the entire room.
Breath with your stomach not your chest. meaning each breath you take your stomach rises and falls not your chest.
If you feel dizzy or your body is swaying is a good sign for a beginner. It represents the beam.. your chi hitting clogged spots and is trying to straighten them. Eventually you will be able to sit straight for an extended periods of time. When you exit the mediation it should feel like you just woke up from a sound sleep. When you've accomplished this you've hit the REM state of mind.--congratulations. As you meditate more you should be able to enter this REM state more quickly.
____________
Note: if you are able to sit in a lotus position... you can also rest you hands on your knees and touch your thumb to the middle finger of the same hand.

I don't know what you did, but more power to you. I wish I knew what to tell you in order to build upon that, but it sounds like you've gone straight to the top with meditation, as far as mental relaxation. I do a mind/body scan where I relax different parts of my body, one at a time, and it is helpful when preparing for sleep. It is a very gifted person who can do so so quickly. In my experience it takes time and practise. I have many books and Cd's for my reference. Perhaps browsing the internet can help you find what you are looking for in small tidbits. Good luck!

Here's a variation of an ancient method that I came up with for a friend, a way to direct the mind and drain bad memories of their power.
Try this. Remember the cursed diary in HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS? Write a cursed diary. Think of a negative thought or bad memory you want to get rid of. Feel it like a dark sludge stuck in your head you want to get rid of.
Feel the sludge ooze out of your head, down your arm, and out your hand as you write about the memory onto a piece of paper. Write the memory or thought until you feel the sludge has poured out of your body into the paper. The paper holds that evil thought now.
Take the paper holding that thought and destroy it. Tear it up, burn it, scatter the ashes to the wind. That evil thought is now gone from your mind and your life.
Trust me, it works.

sit or lie in a quiet, candlelit room. when you are comfortable close your eyes and let your whole body relax. empty your mind of all the day to day rubbish, concentrate on deep breathing whilst visualising the colour yellow. i try and visualise a sunrise. that helps me. it takes a bit of practise but this is easy to learn and we find that it works. good luck with that xxx

google for something like Glasgow steps relaxation - there's a "quick relaxation" and a "deep relaxation" somewhere around in mp3 form. They're very very straight relaxation techniques - they work wonders.

Sahaja yoga meditation. that is unfastened and it somewhat works. that is easy and you do no longer ought to pass to a guru/ instructor so there is not any hierarchy power journeys or people in it for the money. you purely do it for your self.
