I believe this is an attitude of mind that when we see a need we attempt to help. So whatever our talent is, whether an empathy with a person who is suffering, practical help, fulfilling the educational needs for those less well blessed, we don't turn away but help. The good Samaritan was a brilliant example. All the people you would have expected to have compassion on the victim went on by. But the Samaritan, who was despised by the Jews of the time, was the one who put in time and effort to save the man.
When Jesus was being asked about the coming of his future kingdom he made sure that those around should understand that doing things for others in his name, selflessly and from the heart meant that they would please him.
It is the opposite to the way the Pharisees did things by having someone blow a trumpet as they went to give money to the Temple.

Actually there is nothing you can do in secret to be a better Christian, just read the bible and really get to know and understand it and then you will come to know what God requires of us. The word Christian means Christ-like, so to be christian we have to follow the example Jesus set for us while on earth. Read the Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John accounts in the bible, and learn about all the wonderful things Jesus did like preaching the good news about God's Kingdom, making disciples, being humble and the list goes on and on. Becoming an imitator of Christ and doing the will of his Father just as he did is what makes a true Christian.
At John 14:6 Jesus said: “I am the way and the truth and the life."

As a buddhist, most of my "good deeds" are done in secret... unless the situation calls for them to be overt.
With Buddhism, it is all mental... something like choosing the good answer instead of the vindictive answer on Yahoo would qualify...
Or saying something nice about your enemy in a public setting...
Or leaving an extra dollar in the basket at church when you see that someone takes a dollar out (instead of reporting them).

What good deeds you do will be rewarded .
Any bad deeds will be punished.
God is watching you.
How many times have you heard the expression ''you'll get your reward in Heaven'' from other people when you do them a favour ? Plenty, I hope is the answer.

If your question were the truth of the cause of the good deeds, then the deeds would be as filthy rags I think.

Not really a secret, but I do try to be kind to people and make them comfortable. I live by exmaple, I do not proselytize or tell peolple they are going to hell unless they follow my beliefs; I do not presume to speak for God. I prefer to attract people toward, rather than drive them away from, God.
