Ten years ago I gave up work and had a family, the time has now come for me to return to some kind of work, but it terrifies me.Obviously partly as i have been at home too long but also as when I worked before I suffered from severe panic attacks brought on by being in a stressful job.I worry that they will return,it took me years to get over them.I dread doing an office job or working in a shop as I think I will get stressed. Can anyone suggest a job to suit, or help in any way?My hubby is fed up and wants me to contribute to the household income.

How about receptionist? I know you might be afraid of seeing different people all day or being 'on display' there but I found that helped me. I started having panic attacks after working in a high pressured call centre. I know it doesn't sounds stressful but it was medical products and we had calls fed through to us every 20 seconds with no break and were talking to people who were really depressed about being really, really ill. That really got to me and I was on edge all of the time. Going into work and putting on the headset just made me burst into tears and start losing my breath and feeling like I was oging to black out. I went to work in a leisure centre on reception. Seeing all those smiling people - families with their kids wanting a swim, old ladies coming to do the pensioners aerobics, everyone saying hello... it made me feel so much more relaxed. Bits were boring just sitting there and the job was far from making the most of my brain, just swiping people's cards and giving them locker keys but it gave me a couple of years break and I was able to go into being a PA after that as it gave me my confidence back and my brain time to relax and adjust. You could try reception work somewhere. If it's at a smaller company with less people coming in you might prefer that. Go into reception at wherever you're thinking of and just make sure the phones aren't ringing off the hook and the receptionist doesn't look harrassed though as there's the odd one where it's not as chilled out. Also what I liked about working on reception was that you weren't sitting with lots of people you knew at work so if you didn't want to talk, you didn't have to. Just a hello from the customers was fine but sometimes if you are scared of having a panic attack sometimes lingering too long with one person in conversation, your mid can start thinking 'what if I have one now?' and you lose concentration which makes it worse. Just 'Hi, locker key? Have a good visit' was enough for me, then relax again.

Why not start with some voluntary work? Perhaps in an area you would like to work, like with children or in hospital or with older people. Also look at getting some new qualifications, that can give your confidence a boost as well. Talk to your husband. Say you don't want to start a job and then have to leave because of panic attacks so you need to go in slowly and find the right thing to do. Have confidence in yourself, if you can run a family you can hold down a job.

If panic attacks have been a recurring problem, write the four basic steps on a little card, with a list of sample Coping Statements on the back. Mark the card with bright stripes to make it easy to find in your wallet, and keep it with you everywhere you go until you memorize the steps and know them thoroughly. Study these steps and learn them in advance. If you have a panic attack, get out your card immediately and follow it exactly. Once you learn these steps you won't need the card.

The Four Steps:
Relax.
Stop Negative Thinking.
Use Coping Statements.
Accept Your Feelings.

Relax by taking slow, deep, complete breaths. Calm yourself by remembering that you are only having a panic attack and that nothing more serious is happening to you. Continue to take slow, deep, complete breaths. Slow, deep, complete breaths will relax your body, which is the first step to reversing the release of adrenaline.

Stop negative thinking by shouting the word "STOP!!!" really loud inside your head. By shouting the word "STOP" you are interrupting the emergency message that your brain is sending to your adrenal glands. Often people having a panic attack get into an endless loop repeating the same catastrophic thoughts over and over in their head. Interrupting this endless loop gives you the opportunity to replace the scary message with a calming one.

A coping statement is a positive statement that is at least as strong as the catastrophic statement that you have been scaring yourself with. Replace the negative thought with a positive one. Choose a statement that addresses the negative thought.

Accepting your feelings is very important. Minimizing this experience usually serves to perpetuate it. Start by identifying what emotion you are feeling. Most panic attacks are caused by the emotion of fear or some variation of fear. Identify the emotion you are feeling and find the reason that you feel it. Validate that feeling and the reason for it.

I think panic attacks are one of the worst experiences a person can have. They can be overcome however. I would start with evaluating what makes a job stressful and what kind of job would be most suited to you. Counseling is often very helpful and going to see your doctor to rule out any physical problem is a good idea. You also might benefit from an antidepressant to deal with the screwed up neurochemicals that predispose you to panic attacks. As for your husband, he could use some education in anxiety disorders and empathy.

How about a cashier, just have to ring things up on the cash machine and make change and call for the occasional price check - doesn't sound too stressful. Or why not think of being a florist's assistant, you get to be around great smelling flowers all day. Or, think about being assistant to a dog groomer if you like animals or work in a pet store. The list is endless, take a look in your wanted ads and see what's out there.
