Wall to Wall carpet is quieter for sure - I just took carpet out of my house - it was almost 10 years old. It was disgusting!!
We have pets of course. We installed hardwood floors and are now buying area rugs, they are much easier to clean and maintain. If the dog has accident, we can just roll it up and have it cleaned, or toss it out. I think the wood floors add value and also give design versitility

IT's according to the look you are going for and how you plan on keeping it clean. Carpet holds germs more. Hardwood gets dusty and scratched. Is there a shoes off rule?

We have 5 naughty cats at my house---they pee everywhere. Our carpets were ruined. So we got wood floors instead. It's a dream come true. :p
Carpet:
-soft and kid-friendly
-prone to stains
-hard to clean sometimes (ex: cat pee, throw up)
-sometimes more attractive
Wood:
-easy to clean (HEAVENLY!)
-noisy noisy noisy
-scratchable
-not comfortable
Conclusion: If you have pets, I'd get wooden floors. If you have young kids, get carpet. If you have both, I'd say get wood and then get one of those smaller rugs for the kids to sit on. Also consider the color of the wood/walls, the type of furniture, and maybe even if you'll get a fireplace or not.
Good luck. I hope I helped. :)

Definately carpet. Wood floors need to be cleaned of dust and crumbs very often and also your feet get really cold in the winter.

Hardwood is timeless and adds value to your home. I love the look of a hardwood floor with a lovely area rug. Great combination.............added value to your home and if you move you can take the rug with you!

Carpet is quieter and doesn't scratch. Wood is beautiful, but noisy, scratches easily and takes more maintenance.

Wood, you can always add an area rug for warmth. If you have children (small) or pets, I'd recommend wood laminate (a good one).
