letisha b, don't be absolutely ignorant. do you seriously live under a rock where you're under the impression that only white people are gay? In 1928 Gertrude Rainey was quite open about her sexuality. Even though she was married to a man, she would not and could not hide her sexual appetite for women. She was black. Derrick Peterson... American champion 800 meter runner, he was black and gay. There was even question at some point as to whether Malcom X was homosexual or not.

Get a freakin' clue, the two points isn't worth the ignorance that some people spew forth.

As far as should homophobia be a crime? No. Just like someone should not be jailed for having arachnophobia. What SHOULD be punishable are hate crimes such as beatings that stem from homophobia.

Your asking should somebody be punished for having an opinion?

no.

Dont get me wrong if any crime is aggravated by a hate aspect, then yeah it should be punished accordingly,
and for the record, i think homophobes are idiot, ignorant scumbags.

However this is still a free country, and any persons (no matter how much of a chopper they are) has a right to hold an opinion .

So No having a personal hatred like homophobis should not be a criminal offence.

Discrimination and crimes with a hatred element is already an offence

No. The problem with all minorities including religious and ethnic is the more they complain the worse it gets for them. Live and let live but don't harp on about being the underdog all the time. If you are gay so what I'm not that's it. To sent someone to jail because they have a different point of view is wrong. If we ever want to have a multi cultural mixed country we have to live with each others likes and dislikes. We are only here for a short time enjoy it.

Homophobia is repugnant, but no individual must not be punished for their thoughts, beliefs or attitudes.

If, on the other hand, they act in such a way as to discriminate against someone or cause harm to someone on the basis of such beliefs, thoughts or attitudes then there is potentially grounds for redress.

Good question.

I wish my brother was here to answer it, but he is not so i will have a go.

To be phobic means that you are scared of something, right?
So i guess Homophobics are scared of gays.

I dont think it should carry a prison sentence unless there was assault or abuse involved, then of course, it would be a crime.

Live and let live.

Not in the UK.

Our police have stated publically, at the highest level, that AND I QOUTE: " are institutionally homophobic"

Thus all police officers should be put in prison; I think not.

p.s. I bet the UK police would love to be able to jail people for what is, in its extreme form, a mental illness and for what is a 'thought crime'! They would also be able to lock up all orthodox muslims. Great! That would really help their Christmas arrest bonuses. The filth would be in their element!
God help us all!

Only if a crime is committed to "demonstrate" the homophobia...i.e., assault, murder, arson, etc. You can't legislate against what a person thinks. That is "thought control". But when a racist, bigot, homophobe, etc., acts on those thoughts, then they commit a crime and should be tried accordingly.

I thought Homophobia was the fear of Homosexuals, So you want to jail someone for being afraid now. OK I'm afraid of heights, How long should I be jailed for. Please don't say a suspended sentence as i just said I'm afraid of heights.

It would be another step in the process of complete State control like the proposal to keep records of all telephone calls however private they might be.

Why should the law be used to prosecute people who think that homosexuality is a crime. By your reasoning, homosexuals should be jailed.
