I know they allow you additional opportunities to ask and answer questions but is that all? Does having more points somehow imply greater credibility in answers? Should I strive to garner more points? Can I turn in more points for the *big* bunny rabbit toy?

Points encourage us to stay on the site longer, thus exposing us to more advertising here on YA. Once upon a time watching television was totally free, you are provided entertainment while the sponsors parade their products across the screen.
Websites such as these offer entertainment for the masses at a nominal cost for them to produce, they sell advertising. The more Yahoo Answer participants they have, viewing the screen for long amounts of time. The more money they can demand from their advertising sponsors.
It really has nothing to do with points, it's all about the bottom line of a successful on-line business venture.

When you reach the point each day where you can not answer or ask any more questions because you are a "Level 1" you will understand why points are important.

No, other than giving you the ability to ask and answer as many questions as you like, there's really no great advantage. I STILL haven't gotten my light bulb OR tote bag.

no they are only Good to allow you to answer or ask more questions nothing else. and many who have got toe level 7 have had to start again.

No points aren't good for anything, but "best answers" are good for your soul and will eventually get you into Heaven.
