Do you use Text Talk when you are not using your mobile phone?
I have noticed it a lot on here, and yes I am old but sometimes I struggle to understand it, it seems like it is taking over the world do you think we should embrace it or try to avoid using it ?

1--- when I saw the question in the list I thought, sure I understand TX talk, I lived in Texas for a while and I "dun learned to understan all them thar peeple and their y'alls."

then when i opened the question, I realized that is one of the problems with text messaging, there is no real standard. some of the questions on Y/A cannot even be understood because of all the abbreviations that are used.
"tht iz prblm cuz ppl cnt no wut u tlkng bout wen u ask ? on y/a nd so cnt gv gd answr"
the other problem is that the kids , and probably some semi-adults, forget what they are doing and use these ridiculous abbreviations on papers that are submitted either for school work, or sometimes in the workplace. "gr8" is not how you spell either great or grate, and you lose points on any papers I correct. My daughter is in management for a bank holding company, and sometimes shows me papers that she has received. she wants me to correct them so she can returm them to the sender, usually telling them why they will not be advancing any time soon, or why they will not be the successful bidder on a new contract. incidentally, she is a former english teacher herself, but still runs stuff by her old man.
one of the first things i did after coming on y/a was ask how to understand some of this crap, and i still go to the sites that were recommended to me so i can understand what some of the abbreviations mean

Interesting question, I was at a lecture recently on the use of the english language in theatre and this topic came up..'how people are destroying the english language with text talk'.

However it was agreed that language is an organic living thing, always evolving and changing not fixed.

For example we dont speak the same english now that Shakespeare did in his day.. it changed for better or for worse.

Different english speaking countries have their own versions, for example the english spoken here in Ireland is different in ways to England, different again in Wales, Scotland and certainly in the USA.

People are more influenced by different dialects, phraseology, accent now as we have digital communication and are in touch with the world..we see and hear American culture on the tv, the net, we travel more.
A hundred years ago these things didnt exist so language changed more slowly.

Its harder for people to keep up with evolving variants of language including text speak sometimes but it should be remembered as a rule text speak is designed to be economical.
As texts cost money ,younger people abbreviate and write words phonetically to use less letteres and save money, whilst still, hopefully, making sense.

So I hope dis ansr has bin a gr8 halp 2u!

As a literate, educated person I do not embrace it even if I sometimes use it online.
I can understand it because I can read it phonetically. It is a form of short hand, & it's cute and clever. It started with custom license pl8s.
But I hope it will not spread into use outside of all i-things, cell phones, blogs, chat rooms, etc.

I understand some of it because I text a lot my cell. The reason people use text talk on a cell because the space is limited.

On Y/A there is enough room to type full sentences.
It's annoying! Are people that lazy?

I understand SOME of it, but it's worse than 1-ebonics and 2-phonetics!!!

Society depends upon clear communications of ideas, and this new "IM-ing" is just trash talk and does not contribute to good communications.

We should avoid using it in OTHER situations OTHER than IM-ing.

Have a polite day.

I don't like it and it's probably because I'm old. I don't waste my time trying to decipher text talk. I will occasionally use lol or rofl, but that's the extent of my text/chat type talk. I don't care to embrace it and it hurts my head to try..........

No - I struggle with some of it. Though I do use 4, ur and tks when I'm running out of space, but only 'cos I don't know anything else.

we should avoid using it. cellphones have predictive text for writing messages and we should use it instead of using Tx talk. It's stupid.
