It would come from someone having a sunburn on his neck, meaning they work outside all day. As opposed to someone who works in an office all day.

It is a derogatory term to mean someone who is inbred, especially people from the South or those who think or act like them. It is believed that down South in rural areas, incest is common, so families may have some inbreeding which causes mutations such as an actual "red neck".
Today, the term is used in a generic sense to describe someone who is conservative, Christian, has old-fashioned values, enjoys hunting or has guns/rifles, lives in the country in a poor home with old, dead cars littering their front yard.

well i'm from the south and red neck (from what others say.. i never knew what it meant until i asked or just figured it out) means this:
It refers to a.. white man (no offense) whose neck turns red from the sun.
Its also been refered to people that live kind of old-fashioned, have heavy southern accents, like to hunt, drive muddy pick-up trucks and rev the engine really loud on the streets and wave the confederate flag. hehe

The word redneck derived from people who worked outside, like in fields doing manual labor, but they did the work instead of using horses or cattle, this inturn caused them to get a red neck, but as these people worked hard they tend to play hard too. So to this day it is for people who work hard and play hard, just that most of these people tend to live in Georgia and love in trailers.
