Same reason republicans take the moral high ground over democrats, white supremicists over minorities, pro life over pro choice, etc. Groups want to believe that they are right and have THE answer. Respecting everyone's opinions, human rights, beliefs, etc. is easier said than done. We humans love to judge the h*ll out of each other.

Where do you people come from? If the belief if so archaic, what is your worry? Why has this belief been so difficult to eradicate? Christians are the most persecuted of all religions, yet we continue.
Dismiss Christians and get on with your life! But as an atheist, where do you get your concept of good and evil; what's ethical, if not from real Christian values somewhere back in the day....
I'm on a journey and if you say no to the wanting a ticket for the ride, so be it. I'm not going to try to make you accompany me.
Let me tell you a story. I chased a woman one day to get her to please accept Christ as her savior, this was on a Sunday afternoon. I was compelled to witness to her. She died that Tuesday without having done so. I don't normally chase people down or take moral high ground over anyone. When I am led to say something to you, believe me it's by the leading of the Holy Spirit...acceptance is up to you.
Dismiss it and take a chance...oh, but if you die, there's nowhere for you to go anyway, so it matters not...

When christians act as if they are superior to atheists (and all other religious groups) they are attempting to make heathens (i.e. non-christians) feel ashamed for being heathens.

One of the things that motivates christians is a tradition called "the great commision". Basically christians believe that it is their duty to convert every human being on earth to christianity. But there's a problem. Christianity is so chock full of silly, archaic, nonsense that many people will not take it seriously if christians only appeal to conscious and reason. So christians have had to appeal to emotions such as fear and shame to pressure more people into converting to christianity. And unfortunately this strategy has been pretty darn successful. As long as this strategy keeps working they will continue to portray themselves as the righteous ones and label all heathen non-believers as unrighteous.

Because we can
It isn't a moral high ground, to have 'faith' in that which one cannot see. No more than it is to constantly belittle someone, or try and find fault because they don't think like you. I say live and leave me the H-- alone. Now there's a moral "high ground for ya
I will say it is true about your belief being archaic, I think it's great that you recognize it and are seeking 'answers'

Moral highground is subject to each individual. If I, a Christian, live a more moral life than a specific Atheist, or if an Atheist lives more morally than I do. The same can be said for those atheists who think just because they are Atheists, they are more intelligent by default. As I can see... that's not the case at all.

Psst...the ones who actually do that are the ones who need to feel better about themselves...better people don't need to do that and are actually comfortable with others of different faiths...weird isn't it? Just wondering but what archaic belief do atheists have? Only archaic belief I have is that nature can kick anythings a55...but I thought that was just plain scientific fact....

I don't think there is any room for a Christian to take the moral high ground over everybody. Christians believe that they are children of God, which means that God the Father would be more offended by their sins than over the sins of others. That fact should make Christians more humble.

You are right to state that both have archaic beliefs. Atheists believe just as much as theists do; just a different set of beliefs. They shouldn't be any more smug toward theists than theists are to them.

I am a Christian. I try to live a moral life to the best of my ability. I am sure many atheists have high morals and may do better than I. But, moral decisions or good deeds do not get you to heaven. Only by accepting the free gift of salvation by Jesus Christ can one get there.

Most of us don't try to be condescending to atheists. My greatest hope is that they will find God and we will all be together in eternity with Jesus.

Morals are what keeps the eternal soul from decaying. Trying to do what is right is what God wants all people to do, not just Christians. The spotlight is on Christians because we are self proclaimed followers of Christ which simply means that we should be setting an example by living a life that includes high moral fiber. Sadly, as humans, we sometimes fall short of that objective and non Christians jump right on any wrong doing on behalf of a christian.

As a christain, I do not believe that I am any better than anyone else. It's just that Jesus directed us to share the gospel with people everywhere. It is his desire that all people should come to repentance so that they may live eternally with him. We are trying not to cast judgement, but rather to share the truth, so that you might live. If I have said something in this forum, to make you think that, I apologize. I want the Christians to have favor with people not disrespect. Always remember, you are like the prodigal son. Jesus is just waiting for you to come home to him, so that he may wrap his loving arms around you. No matter what you say, no matter how you feel, no matter how you believe. If you will repent, he will forgive all and save your soul. He is that loving of a God!
