We are traveling to new york for the first time and want to go to Canal street. Are they open on Sunday too? And what time Friday and Saturday do they normally close? Also is there a certain area of Canal street that we should get dropped off at ie. east, west etc. - we want to get purses, necklaces etc.

For "shopping" you can start at Broadway and Canal - and walk toward Mott Street (toward the Bridge) check out Pearl River and the little markets at street level - little stalls inside. Walk down Mott to Bayard - that area has a lot of "shopping", too.

Chinatown stores and restaurants don't stay open late - most stores close before 8 and most restaurants close before 11.

canal street is quite a long street, and goes right through chinatown. and chinatown's busiest business day has always been sunday, so that should spill over to anything else that's on canal as well.

you probably would want to be dropped off closest to the holland tunnel, because the traffic any closer towards chinatown would be impossible. besides, you get to start at one end of the busy part...

Best is to visit shops before 6 P.M.
