I have a 5 month old chihuahua /rat terrier mix Whe we first got him he jumped off the couch and broke both of his front legs, yesterday he broke them again. I was wondering if anyone is familiar enough with this breed to know if there are any genetic diseases common to this breed that would make their bones weak.

Well apparently everyone thinks i don't tka emy dog to the vet i we've spent $1000 on this dog alone, the vets answer is he's a small breed and gave me calcium telling me he could no guarantee he wouldn't break them again. oh and to the rude person who says I answered my own question the breaks are in 2 differnet places in both legs.

I would appreciate if you came here to judge don't bother, I have spent over $1000 dollars on this dog I don't want to have him put down just thought someone might be more informed than I. I can't find anything on the internet saying anything about the breeds having congenital defects.

Friends of ours have a maltese mix that has broken the same leg twice, jumping down from the couch.

I would get a second opinion to begin with and train your little guy to stay off the furniture.

Good luck.

i just got a 9week poodle/chi pup. he jumped off the couch and wacked his jaw as i went to get him he staggered around and didn't make a sound until i asked him if he was ok then he cryed a little i checked him and he was fine, the next day he did it again with the same thing happening all over again.now when he is sleeping i make sure he is on the floor before i leave the room. he is a tough little guy but like most dogs their bones arn't fully developed until they are 2 yrs old.your pup might not have gotten enough good nutrition from the mom or was taken away a little to early. give him lots of cooked beef and strenghting foods.like eggs, cheese, chicken grains and fish to build him up i'm sure the vet can recommend a good diet. he must be really weaked boned to have them break so easily.i hope he gets better and you can find out if this will be ongoing. best of luck

You answered the question yourself, This is the 2nd time he broke them, they are so weak after 1 break, but 2??Also Why are you not taking the pup to the vets for healing them?
I assume your not since your not asking this question to the vet.
The pup need to have the bones fixed and he will need to have braces put in place in the bones.
Poor puppy. I don't know what to say but if this is time 2?? You need to not have dogs.

Rickets, Osteochondrosis, Metabolic bone diseases in general are some that come to mind. She could have a congenital collagen defect as well. Take him to a vet....get some x-rays and her diet assessed.

have always been told that small dogs when they jump off somthig they can break their legs. its something normal for them some of them don't. i guess you just have one that can't really jump off things not sure what else to do but be careful take care.

chi's do not have very big/strong bones to begin with so it easy for them to break.
