I am no fisherman or angler, but am informed that using a spear on a string, or an air-rifle is illegal, but a vicous looking hook on a line is OK.
What the Dickens is going on ?
Oh, a bow and arrow is also illegal, although it is still on the Statutes that all Englishmen should practice the long-bow for one hour per day, barring Sundays.

I am bemused.

Any thoughts ?

Bob.

That may be true where you live, but you should check your local and state (country) regulations. Here in Alabama, you can legal bow fish but not for game-fish. (IE Bass, Crappie, Catfish) as for other fish like Gar and Carp, you can use a bow and arrow to harvest. You can also use a spear gun for saltwater fish. But as for using an Air rifle, that is illegal.

Spearfishing is a popular recreation on the eastern end of Long Island, NY. I've known spearfishmen who have bull's eyed 20-pound plus striped bass. To do it, nevertheless, you need an underwater spearfishing equipment. Can't do it, any other way.
