I have heard it is better not to sign a credit card. Is this true?

Someone came up with the stupid idea to write "Ask for ID" instead of signing the card, believing this would be more secure. It's not. If it were, the credit card companies would have that already printed on the credit card in great big letters.

Sign your credit cards just like the credit card companies request.

I sign because there's no reason not to. People rarely check credit cards for signatures (I have some cards I haven't gotten around to signing and they've never been challenged) nor do they abid by the "Check ID" since I've never been asked for ID with my cards that have that on the back.

I sign all of my credit cards.

Not signing a proper signature will void the credit card protection a person has should the credit card or credit card number be stolen.

I would prefer to pay only $50 or less if my card/card number is stolen rather then pay hundreds or thousands of dollars simply because I failed to properly sign the card.

That is the stupidist idea I ever heard of. Every time you try to use your card, you will have to pull out your ID. If you want to have your id presented, call the credit card company and tell them to have that instruction when you charge. Otherwise, someone may find your card, fill in your name, and fake an id with your name.

Sign it and write next to the signature: SEE ID. If it's unsigned and stolen, anyone can sign it and you have no recourse. If the clerks are really doing their jobs, they'll ask you for ID too.

It is best that they are not signed, but you don't just leave it blank. In the space where you would sign, write "Check ID" instead. The cashier is required to ask for ID and if your card has been stolen, the person isn't going to have any ID that says they are you.
