It's because they're typical human beings.
I know Christians who laugh at atheists for being atheists. Atheists who laugh at Christians for being Christians. Skeptics who laugh at both for thinking either can "know" what they believe. Creationists who laugh at evolutionists, evolutionists who laugh at creationists.
You can always find someone in any camp or belief-system who will laugh at someone else not of their belief. No one is exempt. That doesn't invalidate that person's beliefs. (This would be an ad hominem argument.) Emotionally, it just makes it hard to respect that person and difficult NOT to associate that person with his/her beliefs.
There are "fundamentalists" within every movement (whether they're actually called such), by this I mean strong, radical believers of that thing, willing to go beyond the average person of that belief-system. There are fundamentalist Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, atheists, abortionists, antiabortionists, conservatives, liberals, gays, straights, trekkies, and witches, to name a few. All have members who laugh at any who are not like themselves.
Are you sure you've never laughed at someone for believing something you think is totally absurd? Never? I'm sure I have, whether I've intended to or not.
It's not right, not good, but sadly normal.

I'm sorry that your friend experienced this: we should not be laughing at one anothers faith.
The bible teaches that there is only one way to get to heaven, Jesus Christ. Perhaps these "fundies" should have explained that rather than laugh at your friend.
As for expecting utmost respect for their beliefs, Jesus said that just as he was hated and persecuted, so will his followers....so maybe these "fundies" that you've experienced aren't reading their bibles.

There are self-absorbed-groups, fanatic religious groups, spiritual groups (where, I think, your friend appears to be), bully religious groups, bully intellectual groups, a group that combines all these(or tries to), a morally intuitive group, etc... I think people laugh at so many different things but losing respect to other people's right to believe in something is a contradiction to anyone's law.

That's what makes them "fundies." And most of them do not expect the utmost repsect for their beliefs.

I dont think those folks were laffing at HER, but at the absurd idea that ANYONE gets into heaven on their own merits. If that were the case then Jesus could have saved Himself a trip to the Cross , couldnt HE? What is all the hoopla about the Cross all about then? If we can do it ourselves (and God says we CANNOT; thats why HE came to do it FOR US! This is called Unmerited favor , or GRACE)
God never called anyone to religion and He certainly doesnt call us to be TOLERANT of belief systems that will take a person on a fast trip to hell. He is interested in truth...the truth is that NO ONE will go to heaven without the righteousness that God has provided for them as a GIFT< thru believing in Christs death, burial and resurrection as the ONLY solution. WE get into heaven on the righteousness of ANOTHER...NO man will enter heaven due to his own righteousness. The bible says "There IS none good, NO NOT ONE"...now either God knows what Hes talking about or we are all in trouble.
It may be a "lovely thought", but it was NOT the truth! Would you rather she believe a lie, but still LIKE YOU because you didnt OFFEND HER? What kind of LOVE is that?
IDEAS are a dime a dozen. God didnt have an "idea"....He made ONE way for all people to be assured of heaven and a home with Him. There is NO OTHER way. He did all the work, and all He asks you to do is to believe it and to trust in what He did FOR YOU.
We are under NO obligation to believe or tolerate lies that send people to hell. Our obligation is to represent Gods interests, His plan and purpose for mankind, NOT our own feeble ideas.

Because, although they profess Christian love and decency, in reality they're complete bastards who use the name of God as an excuse.
