That would be because it's desert.
A very large amount of this great country is desert.

Two-thirds of Australia is desert or semi-desert and experiences very high rates of evaporation; only about 10 per cent of rainfall survives as surface run-off to feed the rivers.
As a result, permanent rivers are limited, with one exception, to the wetter eastern and south-western margins of the continent, and to Tasmania.

I am dumb when it comes to down under I've been there once.

a desert is a very very dry sandy place that typically lacks the water for communities to rely on. you find deserts all over the world, we just happen to have some big scarey ones.

I flew from Perth to Sydney yesterday. Lots of salt lakes. Not much surface water.

There is no water, and the soils are poor.
