I am a 44 yr old wht/ native american female. I have had chronic iron deficiency anemia since high school.
I received iron shots as a teen, then due to extremely heavy periods, had an iron infussion in 2004. (blood work showed less than 8 HGB and immeasurable iron).
Since 2006 I have had fewer and fewer cycles and this year have only had three and they were very light and short. However I continue to get more and more anemic (eventhough I take 5 ferigon iron day). On 9/17/07 I was admitted to the hospital , received 2 units of blood. My HGB 8; HCT 26.2; MCV 64.8; RDW 19.7; PLT 364; Lymph 16.8; chemistry was: CL 10.8; Iron 5.55; TIBC 530; Ferritin less than 1total bilirubin 0.2. Symptoms: extreme fatigue, pale, low grade temp of 99 or so and WBC 9.5. No blood found in stool with card test.
Only other test was an ultrasound-neg. HGB and iron continue to fall even without cycles. No answers. Dr. still blaming Heavy cycles???? not the case. Family hist of cancer, Leukemia etc. HELP!!

You poor thing......Have you tried eating a lots of liver (chicken liver, beef liver)? Cook chicken liver in a table spoon vinegar, soy sauce, and a little bit of sugar (you can put table spoon of raisens for an option instead of sugar), lots of garlic (if you like the taste of garlic). I know vinegar is very wrong (and also garlic) becasue they are blood thinner - so don't use them for now). The liver will not taste so good without them though.

You can try grilling the chicken liver with just salt and pepper. You have to, if you want to get well -

Also, eat a lot of cole slaw (if you are in US) from Kentucky.
You can also cook your fish - in cabbage. Make sure it is chinese cabbage (not for toss salad) Boil you fish meat in 2 cups of water, pepper, salt. You have to eat this - in order to raise your blood count

Do away from beef, chicken, and pork (These meat has a lot of acid especially beef it them. That's your culprit.

Eat GREEN LEAFY VEGETABLES ALL THE TIME. Make this your meal.

Do not eat a lot of rice, or noodles for it has a lot of acid in them too. Eat a lot of complex carbohydrates for now that you are trying to get better.

If you are prompt to eat rice (and you are being a bad girl) try to eat just an ounce or better none. Just look and wish and pray that you get well soon so you can ask me to have lunch with you and we will have a chinese food everyday. OK?

Eat plenty of vegetables and green fruits meaning not too ripe yet ( green banana for your potassium, young apple (not too much of this). Easy on sweets (although fruits has a lot of sugar too) because sugar is also a form of acid which is your enemy,

Stay a way from any bottled drinks - soda especially. Drink Water instead. All the time. Bottom line - do a big change in your life -

If youb do this - you will eventually get rid of your pills. All of them.

I was diagnoised with IDA 2.5 years ago and had to recieve a blood transfusion as well - for the past two years I have had a hysteretomy as they told me it was because of my periods. that did not work - I have had two coloscipes as well as endoscopies which did not show any internal bleeding -

The only thing that was found is that I do not absorb Iron- therefore every 2 months I have to go through iron treatments which is 1 time per week for 4 weeks or iron transfusions. This has been very costly - I also don't have the veins to support the iron so I have also gotten a port placed in my chest and my blood drawn about every 3 weeks.

I would suggest trying a different prescription iron tablet and going to a different doctor. There are treatments out there for low hemoglobin/iron deficiency. Also, if you are going through the change and having fewer, lighter periods (that's what it sounds like) periods should not be to blame at this point. Leukemia generally results in very high amounts of white blood cells and your WBC level isn't high, so I don't think you need to worry about that.

You might consider requesting a referral to a hematologist. Failure of anemia to respond to a good long dose of iron (i.e. a couple of months) is a good reason to visit one.

Also some doctors will consider doing upper and lower endoscopies (where the gastroenterologist has a look at the GI tract with a flexible telescope) if someone has persistent anemia - even if the card test is normal.

Go to a naturopathic doctor, eat a raw vegan diet, drink wheatgrass juice daily, eat lots of spirulina, drink and eat green leafy vegetables in large quantities. Green natural foods build the blood because they contain chlorophyl.
You also need to find out what is causing your anemia. Changing your diet to living foods will make a big difference in your health. Eating concentrated herbal supplements will great regenerate your body as well.
