...Ok, I'm going to treat this as a valid, interesting question. It is an interesting thought, a .22 rimfire as a great end of civilization gun. Obviosly it would come in handy if you were hunting very small game so I would say that you should at least have one, and it might as well be a pistol, since the range of a .22lr is limited anyway. Of course, my personal choice, when thinking about a true doomsday scenario (i.e. collapse of industry, economy, Road Warrior meets Resident Evil style) would be an AR-10. Good capacity, extremely powerful round (.308 Win.) capable of taking down fairly decent sized game as well as roving zombie mutants or other vagrants that try to do you in. Not to mention the availability of ammo from a store shelf (the only place you'd be able to get ammo from most likely).

Try a local gun show. Also check with your local gun shops. Many times people need extra cash and take their guns in for consignment sales.
