First of all, get to the airport in plenty of time, at least 2 hours before your flight is due to leave.
Then at the Departures section, you'll see all these check-in desks. There is usually a big screen that shows where your flight is being checked in. It shows the number(s) of the check-in desk you need to go to. Have your passport and ticket handy, and you'll probably need to queue.
At the check-in desk they will ask questions and weigh your luggage and if it's over a certain weight, they could charge you extra. I think with most airlines it's one bag that weighs 20 kilos, but check with the airline you're using. Put anything sharp like a tweezers or nail file into your suitcase, you're not allowed to bring these into the passenger cabin of the plane. Same for any liquids you don't buy at the airport duty free. Your suitcase then goes through to be put into the baggage hold on the plane.
All going well, the person at the check-in desk with put a little sticker onto your passport for your luggage (don't lose this as it's important if your luggage gets lost) and give you a boarding pass, which shows what Gate your flight is departing from and what time you need to board, and your seat number. You can ask for a window seat or an aisle seat as you prefer. They usually draw a circle around the boarding gate.
Then you go through to the secure area, and keep your boarding pass and passport handy. At some point you will have to go through a metal detector and your hand luggage will be x-rayed as a security measure - this is normal. You will have to put your belt bag, handbag, watch, mobile phone into a little box to be x-rayed also. Don't panic if the metal detector goes off when you walk through - earrings or other piercings can set it off, underwires on bras, metal bits in shoes, jewellery, etc. can set it off. They will then search you, women will search women, and men will search men. It just takes a few seconds, they are checking that you don't have any nasty weapons hidden anywhere in your clothing. This is normal.
Then you can go enjoy the shops if time permits or go straight to your departure gate for the flight. If you buy anything in the duty free, you will need to show your boarding pass. Don't open any alcohol or anything that you buy in the duty free, it's now put in special bags for security.
When you get on the aircraft, try to get to your seat fairly quickly, but do keep off the aisle as much as possible as it's usually very narrow and lots of people have to get on. Switch off your mobile phone, mp3 player, laptop, they will ask you to do this anyway. Bring a really good book if you think you might be nervous, I have found that this helps.
At the other end, after the plane lands, you and everyone get off and just follow the people. You'll have to go through passport control, so have your passport handy and if you an EU citizen try and get in the relevant line (as opposed to the All passports line) as it tends to be a little faster. Then you're free to go and get your luggage, and there will be signs directing you to baggage reclaim, and there's usually a screen above each belt that shows what flight the luggage was on. This can be the most time-consuming part of the journey, waiting for the luggage! Especially if there are a lot of flights coming in. Once you have your luggage, proceed to the appropriate channel (Green if you are not an EU citizen and have nothing to declare, Red if you have something to declare regardless of citizenship, Blue if you are an EU citizen and it's an EU destination). After the customs check, you can go on out to the Arrivals section where the general public are.
The most important thing is to make sure you have plenty of time. Everything is signposted in an airport, but it can be a long walk to your departure gate, especially in the bigger hub airports like Heathrow and Schiphol. And very important - do NOT leave your bag unattended or with anyone you don't know. If you leave your bag alone for even a minute, the airport authorities will take it and destroy it for security reasons.

I know in dublin airport that you must find your check in desk on a huge chart at the front door.
Go to the check in desk, queue, and wait for it to open.
When your at the front of the queue, plop your bags on the scales thing and hand your passport and tickets to the check in desk operator.
She'll say what gate your plane will depart from
Walk through security and when through, have a cup of cha and relax till you gate opens.
You will be called the door or the tunnel thing, show your boarding pass.
Walk down the tunnel and say hey to the cabin crew.
Find your seat, (o the boarding pass) and wait for the plane to take off!!!
Enjoy!!!

1. Arrive at the airport departure hall, making sure that you are at the correct terminal for your flight. Check tickets, itinery, airline customers services, airport website for this information if you do not know it.
2. Check on the display screens for the check in desk(s) number for your flight. Go to the check in desk and more than likely join the queue.
3. Once at check in you will need to present your passport and tickets. If you are travelling with people and want to sit together present your documents altogether and not individually. The clerk will realise you are travelling as a group and endevour to seat you together. Place your suitcase on the conveyor belt to be weighed. The check in clerk might want to weigh your hand luggage too but not always. You will be asked questions about your luggage and packing it, do not joke about having bombs or drugs etc. with your answers EVER, there is no tolerance or leniency given for a bad sense of humour here. Upon completing check in the check in clerk will return your passport and ticket stubs and will also provide you with a boarding card which will also identify which seat you have been allocated on the flight.
4. Although there are shops and cafes to visit, in these days of extended security and unpredictable queing times it is best to make your way straight to security to go "air side".
5. As you head towards security to save time and messing about, place all items especially metallic ones in your hand luggage, making sure any liquids and cosmetics etc are bagged as per government guidelines
6. At security you will have to present your boarding card, nothing else, just the boarding card no passport etc.
7. You will then go through the security checks, where you hand luggage goes through an x-ray machine and you have to walk through a metal detector. This is where the preparation saves time faffing about with other less prepared people holding everyone else up while they only remove various items once at the x-ray machine and metal detectors, holding everyone else and the whole flow up.
8. Once through security you are in the departure lounge "air side". This is where the duty free shops etc are.
9. Before you hit the shops the first thing you should do is look for information display screens which will tell you which gate your flight will be departing from. It is not unusual for it to be as little as 45-60 minutes before departure until your flight's gate number appears next to it on the information screens, so keep an eye on these information screens for updates.
10. Go shopping and to the toilet as many times as required ;o) Sit down anywhere.
11. When your flight has had it's gate allocated you can make your way to that gate, it will be signed and take a seat nearby.
12. When it's time for boarding the airport staff will often call people to board by blocks of seat numbers (eg. rows 1 - 10) so be aware of your seat number. Immediately before boarding you will have to present your passport and boarding card to the airport staff. They will tear part of the boarding card off and leave you with a stub.
13. Continue down the air bridge or corridor either onto the plane or bus that takes you out to the plane. As soon as you step on the aircraft just show the crew your boarding card stub and tell them your seat number, they will direct you to your seat.
14. Sit down and wait for take off because thats the best bit!
It's not all that difficult. Airports are designed to handle very large numbers of people pasing through them and they generally flow very well, nothing is all that over complicated about it.

You need to first find out what airline you are flying. Once you know this information, go to the website for any special announcements you might need to know. For instance there is a rule about the size of carry ons and the weight of checked baggage. Also you can't bring liquids on the plane if over .5ml, and they have to be in a clear plastic ziplock bag.
You need to arrive at the airport at least 2 hours ahead of time. Maybe more for international travel, only because security can take a while to get through.
Most likely you have an eticket. Which means you can go to the eticket kiosk at the correct airline of which you are flying. The kiosk is a machine that looks like an ATM. You will need a major credit card or your passport depending if you are flying internationally or not. You can then either swipe your card or scan your passport, this will pull up your information for your flight. You will confirm your flight, so if you booked online it is good to have a print out with you to double check with the kiosk. Once you've checked everything this will print your boarding pass. If you have luggage you need to be checked then you'll need to go up to the counter to have this done.
Next you'll go through security, this is sometimes stressful because of all of the steps, but they are just doing their job. You'll look for a sign in the airport that says "to all terminals" or something similar, everyone has to go through security. Once you get to security you will see some bins, you need to take your shoes off and put those in one bin, in the next bin your laptop, in one you'll need to put your liquids - remember in a clear plastic ziplock bag, and anything metal you have on jewelery, belt, etc. My suggestion is just dont put those things on till after security - makes your life easier!
After you go through security there are lots of shops and restaurants to eat at, so you can get a drink then - because it will not go through security! You can look on your boarding pass to see which gate you will need to go to, and you can also look on there for boarding time. When you board the plane you need to have your boarding pass out and an ID so they can make sure you are supposed to be on the plane. Usually you will have some time before boarding your flight to sit in the waiting area. You will also have your seat assignment on your boarding pass - everyone in your group will have their seat assigned too, if you buy the tickets together you will most likely have seats together. Depending on the size of the plane sometimes you will board in zones, this is so that everyone isn't on the plane all at once and it is easier to move around. If the plane doesn't have zones most likely they will board first class first and then the rest of the passengers in coach. Once on the plane your flight attendant can direct you to your seat. There are overhead storage compartments for your carry on bags. Then sit and enjoy the flight. Sometimes there are meals and snacks, and even in-flight exercises for really long flights.
I hope this helps. Check the airline's website for any other questions.
