I have to keep my pooch on the lead most of the time for various reasons.. including traffic, running off after deer/squirrels etc and I feel really guilty. He seems happy enough just being by my side and he gets about two hours a day brisk walking with a back pack to tire him out. But I just feel the poor guy is missing out on all the fun. Ive got another dog who s fine off lead and they play all the time at home. Is it just me worrying too much?

I'd suggest getting one of the extendable leads.. use the regular lead to walk them, but when you get somewhere, like a small park or.. somewhere safe to give them some time to roam a bit.. use the extending one.. (I do not suggest those for normal walking because they CAN break, and when you are walking anywhere with traffic or anything, IF it were to break it would be REALLY bad.. they do better with occaisional use, as everyday use will wear them out faster.. ) The beach is good.. another good idea is a dog park.. or, if you have any nature trails that allow dogs.. I know in Ohio there was one called Oak Openings.. and here in Michigan there are tons of them.. so check around..

I doubt the dog is missing out on much.. they enjoy walking with you..

Right now, my dog is always on the leash. This is for 2 reasons:
1) There are leash-laws where I live.
2) I do not feel she is well trained enough to be off-leash yet.

I don't think my dog misses out though, it keeps her safe (and she would be missing out on a lot more if she were dead by being hit by a car or something). She gets to run around free with other dogs when I take her to dog day care.

My dog is not on a lead all the time, as we have land and a fenced in property. If you know your dog has to be on a lead, then don't feel guilty. You're protecting him from getting hurt. Could you possibly get a fence around your property so he can run free?

You should be keeping BOTH of your dogs on leads. Just for safety reasons.
You sound like you live in a busy area and can have a lot of distractions.
Dogs do just fine on a leash and collar.

When we're on walks yes. If we're out in the front yard, no. However we live on a quiet street and both dogs have a good recalls for that small area. We also do not let them wander out of the front yard.

Have u tried getting one of the longer leads so when u get to a place where he can run alittle u can let the lead go out more for him to play more.

Your dogs should be on leads if there uncontrolable...walking without a lead you have to trust them and they have to learn to walk without a leash.. They dont really realize it...Its for the safety..When you think hes ready for it to taken off you can..I really dont reccomend any sighthound off leash though...or dogs with no prey drive...Good luck

yea it is lol dont worry most dogs spend their life on a lead...it all depends on if he is safe off ov it... maybe you could take him into a public football/netball close in and let him lose in their with the doors closed ( like in parks and things) my friend does that.... just do it when people arnt using the courtts

You should fence in your yard so he won't have to be on a lead all day. I've never thought leads were very fair/nice to dogs.
