Buy a cheap one at a department store then go to a bicycle shop and get new high quality Clydesdale alloy rims. Ps Get a rear fender so when it rains you won't have a streak of mud going up your back. High end bikes are quite expensive for the novice rider.

If you're just starting and want something comfortable, go to a local bike shop and ask for a "comfort" mountain bike. You'll only need to spend about $300 - $400 for quality. I know that might sound like a lot, but the fit, quality, and service will make it a lifelong purchase. Go to the department stores (IE Walmart) and you will get turned off to the sport. Spend some time with a knowledgeable sales person and don't buy the first day. A good sales person will be more concerned about setting you up correctly and asking questions than just trying to get you out the door with something you didn't want.

I would suggest that you go to a bike shop first (or a sporting goods store that sell quality bikes such as REI). They would be the best to suggest what size or style of bike to purchase. You might want to get suggestions from more than one shop to make sure that they aren't just trying to sell you what they can make the most money. Try to go with a friend who knows bikes.

Cannondale Bikes Just For Women
http://www.cannondale.com/bikes/07/cusa/jfw/rec/index.html
My wife has a Comfort series and loves it .
Check the classifieds and Craigslist for something top quality.
Also you might want to check with a bike shop regarding a wider gel insert seat.
Purchase only those with a guarantee.
[She] tried several before finding one "right" for her.
You may not encounter the need however.
Have Fun.

One that fits you nice. If you want to go fast, buy a road bike, else try a hybrid or a confort bike.
