Hi

I'm looking for any info and advice the people of Galway can give me on all/every aspect of Galway. I'm flying there from Lancashire, England on 5th November. As yet I have no job, accommodation or contacts. I am applying for jobs but haven't heard anything back yet. I'm going to be staying in a hostel I think for the first week and then just look for a place to rent in a shared house, for money reasons but also for a social life too.

If anyone has any advice they feel the need to pass on about, jobs, rates of pay - I would be looking at graduate work and admin/secretarial, good/safe places to live, best mobile phone provider/contract in fact anything at all that would be great. Or if you just wanna meet up for a drink when I get there that's fine too - LOL

Hi

Well I lived in Galway for 6 years (moved out earlier this year) and you've picked the best city in Ireland in my opinion.

For accommodations - check http://www.galwayadvertiser.com - this is the main source for shared rental accommodation in Galway. You could also check http://www.daft.ie, there may be some ads here too. The Advertiser itself comes out on a Wednesday, but the weekly accommodation list is available from Tuesday from their offices.

Living in the city centre can be quite expensive - 900euro a month for a 2 bedroom apartment. My advice would be Salthill direction - it's a village in it's own right, but it's a suburb of Galway, and a 10-15 minute walk from Galway City Centre. 2 bedroom apartments there would be about 750euro a month, for the sake of comparison. Also, there's plenty of shops / pubs in Salthill, and it's near the beach, and you could spend many an evening walking along it's lovely promenade, along Galway Bay.

I believe that the work that you are looking for should be easy to find, there are quite a few agencies in Galway, and the advertiser website previously mentioned has lots of jobs every week. For admin secretarial work, you could get anything between 20,000 euro - 35,000 euro.

The mobile phone providers are O2, Vodafone, Meteor and 3. O2 and Vodafone are the biggest and best, but look through them yourself to get a better idea of what you want.

As a city, Galway has a lot of foreigners and students, and is very vibrant and colourful, so from the social aspect you should settle in well.

Last bit of advice - bring a raincoat! (it's not constant rain, don't worry but it's very easy to get caught in a downpour.... and you thought Lancashire was bad....)

Galway is a school city, finished of drunks! the final public of human beings residing in Galway city are the two very old or very youthful. even however the county of Galway is eye-catching and appropriate for raising a kin. My admired city is Portumna, that is on the border of Galway and Tipperary and is on the component of each and every thing.

For jobs, try the online employment agencies, or www.fas.ie.

I have heard that www.daft.ie is good for house-sharing, but I've never used it myself.

Galway nightlife is legendary - the sessions rock! You'll like the Crane Bar and Roisin Dubh if you like Irish trad music.
