Intravenously, it is used for hydration, and as a carrier to get other things (drugs, banked blood) into a person.

It can also be used for irrigation during surgery, to dilute medications, and to clean wounds out, among other things.

It has the same amount of salt as most of our body fluids do (0.9%), so it doesn't cause damage to our cells.
