No. You need an International drivers license to legally drive in the United States. This license shows that you currently have a valid license from your home country.
Edit. The term International Drivers License, not permit, was taken directly from the government website, USA.gov.

Yes for a period but I would take an International Drivers Licence with me and if I am going to be there for a while I would take their driving test. Never ever forget the blighters drive on the wrong side of the road and will not appreciate your attempts to teach them otherwise. Can't think why

No, You need an International Permit...some of you have driven on your normal Driver's license because 1) YOU HAVEN'T BEEN STOPPED OR 2) THE OFFICER/DEPUTY/TROOPER DIDN'T KNOW THE REQUIREMENT
You MUST get an International Driving Permit...It would be nice if the folks who aren't sure of an answer or just don't know, would actually STATE that in their answer...otherwise, there may be some folks who could get into some trouble by taking that advice....

Visitors from the UK to USA can use their UK licence visitors from other countries would have to check. The only reason some travel companies suggest international permit is to make money.Obviously US car rental companies wouldn't rent cars to Brits has they do if it wasn't lawful,

An IDP (International Driving Permit) is recommended as, in the event of an accident, some insurance companies will insist on seeing one.
By the way, the proper name is not International Driver's License, but rather as stated above, International Driving Permit.

You definitely don't need an International licence, as was suggested above.
I have driven in the states with a UK licence several times.
If you want to live there, you will have to sit the US test.

Theoretically, sure. everyone might desire to purchase a automobile interior the U. S. in case you have the money. In practicality, I doubt it artwork. you're able to might desire to get the vehicle registered and insured. each and each state has its very own enterprise that handles driving force's licenses and automobile registrations. each and each state additionally themes its very own license plates. maximum states (i'm in simple terms making use of maximum and not all, using fact that i do no longer understand each and all of the 50 states' regulations) require you to be a resident of that state in the past it themes you license plates. As a vacationer, you won't be seen a resident.
