Hi, i started working out and i'm forming muscles but for some reason i'm also gaining weight. My eating habbits seem okay, nothing crazy. I normally spend about 1 hour to 1.5 hour in the gym. I usually do 45 mins of cardio then i hit the free weights.

I don't drink much water though, mostly diet coke and gatorade.

I eat about twice a day; morning and evening.

Someone told me that gaining new muscles can cause your weight to go up.. is that true?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Muscle weighs more than fat. You may be gaining muscle, but toning and making your body lean at the same time. I would not put much stock into what the scale says, but rather how your clothes fit.

I had the same problem. I usually just did cardio, but have just started to incorporate weights into my routine. I put on 3 pounds in 2 weeks. Everyone told me it was just "muscle weight."

You really should stop drinking diet coke. I'm not trying to preach, but I used to drink 5-6 cans a day. I made myself stop drinking it for a month and just drink water, and to this day I still won't drink it. I feel a lot better now, so if you can, give it a try. :)

As people have already mentioned muscle weighs more than fat, so you are bound to gain weight as you gain muscle mass. If you really want to reduce weight (and/or reduce your fat percentage) then you should gradually increase the amount of cardio that you do and slowly decrease saturated fats from your diet.

Also eat more frequent smaller meals, your body will process the food more efficiently that way and will store less of it as fat.

In addition as peope have mentioned, water is better than sodas or 'sports drinks' (I don't even want to say their brand names - yuck!). Even 'diet' sodas are not good for you. The marketing machine has got a lot of people brainwashed.

of course it would make you gain weight, but it's healthy weight, because you're developing muscle cells, which weigh more than fat cells..by the way, you really need to up your intake of water; much of your body is made up of water including your bones, muscles, brain, organs...everything! you could become dehydrated and get cramps easily and that would greatly hinder your workout
