Use Wordart.

In a Word document, click the drawing button on the toolbar.
You will get the Drawing toolbar on the bottom of your screen.
click the Wordart icon.
You will get the Wordart Gallery dialog box
click a "style" then click o.k.
You get the "Edit Wordart Text" box
type the letter, J
Adjust the size by clicking and dragging the corner handle or a side or top.

Have some fun here. Depending on the style you chose, you can change colors, the fill or the line, etc.

You can type in a font size, which will make it larger. Your alternate is to go to paint, make a letter as large as you can there, then select and copy the letter and paste it into word. Use the resize dots on the pasted section to enlarge the letter to as big as you like.

There are 72 points per inch in typography. An 8" letter would thus be 576 points.

The font sizes in the window are just preset. If you can't click in the window and arrow up or down size by size (12 to 13 to 14 ect.) rather than it just jumping from one preset size to another, you can type in the size you want after clicking in the font size box.

I would use word art, because you can type your letter and then expand it so that it takes up the whole page.

You need a graphics program that will let you convert the live type to a vector graphic, and print it from there. High end graphics progs that let you do this are Illustrator and Freehand. I am sure there are some low end freeware/shareware ones out there.

Go into powerpoint, change the layout from landscape to portrait (file/page setup). You will be able to increase the font as large as you want, just type in any number.

You can manually change the font size. Just type in numbers until you get the size that you want.
