i ate about half an apple for breakfast then went on a 1 hour 27 minute walk, (moderate pace, in the hills a bit, so there was incline)

you gotta be kidding!!!
You are starving your body - it needs about 50cal/hour just for basic functioning (like when you are in coma) and thats 1200cal/day.
Your half apple wasnt even enough for your heart to function.

You should eat more than an apple before working out. I run on Saturday and Sunday mornings and I have oatmeal or cereal beforehand. Only eating an apple will make you feel really drowzy for the rest of the day.

an apple is fruit you dont need to burn it off. how much do you weigh and how tall are you.
