My cat is sick (vet thinks cancer or non-effusive FIP) and I know what it entails for him but we're hoping for the best. Anyways what can I do right now to help him with his dry paws so he doesn't slip and slide while walking on hard surfaces? Can I dab diluted olive or vegetable oil on them?

And any other advice, comments, etc... is appreciated.
Thanks :)

Poor kitty, what a problem! They sell these things for dogs that stick to the pads of their feet (they are intended mainly for athletic/climbing dogs) that increase the amount of traction on the paws. Not sure if a cat would tolerate that, though...You could also try a waxy lip gloss like chapstick, obviously just make sure that he is not licking it off. You might try the vegetable oil, but that will probably soak into the pad pretty quickly.

He'd lick off the oil, or it'd soak into the furniture when he goes on it. I've had good luck with vasoline though. Rub a small amount on the main pad, especially into any cracks that may be there. Dab lightly with a bit of kleenex to take off the excess and that should be that. Do it daily for a week and you'll see healing on the pads. I use it on my fingers as well after I've hand sewn items for over 4 hours, it really helps the skin regenerate. MUCH better than any lotion or anything else I've tried.

Rub a dab of vaseline into the pads, then wipe off excess with a soft cloth. They use this trick to protect sled dogs' feet from the snow and ice! I've used it on my pets when they get dry pads, and it works very well.
Sorry your kitty is sick, I'll say a prayer for him. Good luck!

you might try some of the following & see what works, but I'd use moderation & try to check these out a little better to be sure there are no ingredients that might be harmful to your cat.
clear vaseline
olive oil
mineral oil
lanolin
beeswax -I think Burt's Bees makes a chapstick type product from beeswax - not sure what else is in there, but you might check that out & see if that might work - that would make it easy to apply, also I have very dry hands & have found that hand creams that help me most contain either lanolin or beeswax. Good luck w/your baby.
