I'd like to can some fruits, but I don't have any of the jars or lids necessary. Ebay looked pretty expensive, anywhere I can get these for cheap (other than a rummage sale)?

Walmart or a restaurant supplier, even in most grocery stores. You buy them buy the carton.

Check your local hardware stores. This time of year they are usually trying to get rid of anything they didn't sell over the summer and the prices are great! I've seen sales at ACE where the prices were 1/2 off or more. You could also put an ad on craigslist looking for jars. I'm sure there's someone out there that used to can and doesn't anymore. As long as the jars are in good condition they can be reused forever. Rings in good condition can be re-used as well. You always need to use a brand new lid. Good luck :)

Try any supermarket -- or Big Lots, Wal Mart, K Mart, etc. Be sure and get plenty of lids. You can reuse your jars, and your rings, but you will need to get new lids.

While you may have to invest in a package of new jars for now, when you have time, I suggest yard sales to purchase used jars. I have collected quite a few that I save until ready to can. Then, all I have to purchase are the lids.

You can go to Goodwill, Salvation Army but your best source is asking friends if they have any canning jars or to go to garage sales. I just bought a box of 24 Mason jars for $2 at a garage sale in York, PA.

Virtually all supermarkets sell new canning jars. Some foods sold in supermarkets also come in mason jars that can be re-used, such as some brands of spaghetti sauce.

Not sure about mason jars, but if it's glass preserving jars you're after, Lakeland sell them, 2 sizes (0.5 lt and 1 lt) in packs of 6 and the replacement rubber rings. http://www.lakeland.co.uk search preserving jars.

Check your local Freecycle groups..there are always people getting rid of some, or you can post there that you are looking for them.
