I am 18 years old with a narrow upper jaw, My sister had the same thing and she had it corrected at about 15 years with a device that she had to turn every so often at the roof of her mouth, which opened it up more. Could the same thing be used with me, since boys do age at later ages than girls do?

I'VE LIVED WITH THIS SMILE, AND WITH CROCKED TEETH FOR 18 YEARS NOW, AND I DON'T CARE IF I HAVE A NARROW UPPER JAW. I WOULD RATHER HAVE IT THAN FIX IT WITH 5 DIGITS PLUS SURGERY

My daughter's upper jaw was too narrow to line up with her lower teeth. Also her front teeth touched but not her back teeth and also her lower jaw was more forward than her lower jaw (underbite)

She had braces to line up her teeth. Then she had orthognathic surgery where they widened, lowered and moved forward her upper jaw. They pinned all back in place with titanium pins. Her smile is model perfect and gorgeous.

Except for the time of the braces once she had the surgery she was finished in 6 months with her braces off. The procedure you mention above takes much longer than the type of surgery she had. They do not do the surgery until the person is fully grown. They assess this by a bone age x-ray.

You would need an evaluation from an orthodontist, but the palate tends to fuse aorund 14-16. Depending on the amount of expansion needed, it may still be possible. In some cases if the palate needs a lot of expansion, surgery might be needed to help with the correction.

Added 10/2/07 - There are patients I've treated leaving their crossbite the way it is. In some people, the bite can be very acceptable leaving the crossbite. I didn't mean to suggest that you needed surgery, just letting you know that if you have an evaluation, that may be one of the options. I would definitely discuss all the options and risks/limitations with your orthodontist.
