I know this sounds like an odd question, but it's for a science project. Can anyone help me out?

If I put a few earthworms in a pot of soil and planted a plant in the pot of soil, would the earthworms be able to survive? Or do they need to be in the soil outside?

It is not an odd question!

Earthworms can very well survuve in a Pot along with a potted plant .

To be sure take a large sized pot.

Put organic waste and turn the soil from time to time .

Do not put inorganic fertilizers or granulated fertilizers or any salts in the pot . ( N P K fertilizers I mean )

Keep it as natural as possible .

Organic fertilizers are welcomed by them!!!

They can survive in potten plants if the soil is adiquite to their living soils and if it's watered every few days.

Yes they can, and actually tend to benefit the soil. Store-bought potting soil often has fertilizer pellets mixed into it (they look like tiny white or green lumps--kind of like "Nerds" candy). Anyway, those fertilizers are harmful to the worms; they burn their skin.
