At the start of the war he retired (fired) Winfield Scott who was very old, fat and considered senile. However Scott's proposed strategy was eventually responsible for winning the war. Scott wanted to take the Mississippi River from end to end and split the Confederacy. The beginning of the end was when Grant took Vicksburg and did exactly that.

Some chap wrote a book called 'Lincoln and his Generals' based on the theory that the President kept firing Generals until he got Grant as C-in-C.
