I have a friend that is breaking up with her boyfriend and he will be moving out very soon. A few years ago she gave hom a dog as a gift, but she has been the one to raise him and he is bonded to her a lot more then to him.

She believes he will be moving half way across the country and is afaid that he will take the dog just out of spite. He likes the dog and all, but is not as involved as she is.

I know this may sound like a silly question, but is is really weighing on her.

I think that she said that her name was on the papers and they had his added to it (so both of their names are one them).

Can anyone give me some advice to give her about what she can do to keep the dog legally?

If both of their names are on the papers, then legally, the dog belongs to both of them (Owner and Co-Owner).

They need to sit down like adults and decide what is best for the dog.

I think they need to be adults about it and do what is best for the dog. They sound like they are being very childish about the whole thing. When I broke up with my boyfriend, he wanted to take the dog and have him put down. (He was an abuser and a control freek.) I just told him I paid for the dog, all the vet papers were in my name, and he couldn't have the dog. He just gave up and left it alone. The threatened to fight me in court about the dog, but that would have put things out of his control so he let me keep the dog. It was the best thing for the dog anyway. I had a house and a job and could afford to take care of the dog. He had nothing. Your friends just need to grow up and discuss it like adults.

when i first read the start of the description i thought to myself no way the dog is his, she gave it as a gift but she raised it its hers, i got my dog as a gift off my BF and if i left he would be coming with me as i have raised him also. anyways both the names are on it so i think it would have to become a mutual agreement. i would buy the exact same looking dog and give him that dog when he was leaving and keep the other dog if he never bothered to get involved and would take him out of spite

If her having the dog is best for the dog, she should stash the dog with a relative until he moves across country. If he doesn't care about the dog, he'll just move on.

To my knowledge, there aren't any laws on dog custody. so they're just going to have to work it out. Maybe she can start being really nice and trick him into letting her keep the dog.
