Because most people don't understand what is really going on over there. Americans have done a vast number of good things for the people of Iraq (namely freedom from Saddam) but all we ever hear about are the bad things. I truly believe if we had this kind of media coverage during WWII that we would have lost the war! I can just see the coverage of Iwo Jima or the Battle of the Bulge now...

Because too many people care about what is in it for them and have limited or no sense of commitment, duty or patriotism. I wonder what John Kennedy would think about how the times have changed-Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country; has changed to if there is no benefit to me directly then I won't do it and How much cash do I get up front to join or I serve by staying here and protecting while those killers protect my rights to do so. I don't mind the protest do mind the demonetization of the military or anyone who does not agree with the protesters point of view. The problem is kids are not being taught enything it appears except they deserve this and that and it should be provide to them withou sacrifice or havingto do anything. They are special and deserve it so they should get it.

Because the Media has it's own agenda, most of the populace does not remember what we went to war for or why. They read about the death and destruction and that's all they see not the who, what or why we are at war, it has not hit us in the face like 9-11 did, Pearl Harbor so we forget the reasons and they become obscured by the smoke and shadows devised by the Media to keep you coming back to their Rag, TV- Radio station, magazine; they use controversies to keep you're attention and thus keep you coming back to see what's next. This is all done to sell their Ad time, space to make more and more Money. Think about it is all I ask of anyone.

Yes, that was an act of war, and without people like your friend, and my brother who joined for the same reason that your friend did, and many others as well, this country would fall apart. I honestly do not like bush, and i feel that he is not doing a very good job in handling this affair, but we need to be there, we cant just let this (911) happen to us and not take action. We need to be more supportive of the brave people in this country who are going overseas to help protect our freedom and well being. Remember United we stand, Devided we fall, its true if the people of this country would stand together on an issue instead of whinning and crying all day, then there would be no one who could stand in our way.

Because the parents that do that type of thing are usually looking for a free ride for themselves and their kids. When our children were small they were taught that freedom isn't free and it was their duty to join the Military for at least 4 years to be of service to their country and repay those that had gone before them. Most people don't truly understand what this country stands for, we don't even teach American History in school anymore we use to learn about our country from elementary school through high school not anymore.

The reasons for the war was a pack of lies no-WMDs found etc. The war went well but the peace was extremely poorly planned. It is becoming another Vietnam. With all of the bad stuff. You have to have a country that wants to be helped. Iraq is a country that doesn't have the political will to do the things that it needs to do to be helped. We need to get out.
I support the troops and want them in a situation where they can do good. I believe that this no longer one of them. The mistakes by our political leaders and the seemingly corruption of the political system by companies like Haliburten etc is sacrificing the troops for profit.
I spent time in Desert Storm while spending 13 years Active duty and volunteer as an adult leader in a military high school program. Two of my children are planning on joining the military.

dpj5 - the surge is in Iraq not Afghanistan...
Despite NATO forces being in Afghanistan, Talliban attacks have tripled. President Karzai knows you cant beat 'em so join 'em and he is known and in some circles respected for his ability to broker such treaties.
Keep in mind Iraq has nothing to do with 911 - The taliban hated Saddam Hussein. There is no way they would be cooperating.

My brother is a Sgt and my Mother a Lt Colonel, both entered the miltary to serve this country and make themselves better people. Both have recognized that Iraq has nothing to do with a war on terror.
I don't want to lose my brother to a war for someone's vague gain. I don't want him to lose his legs or an eye either. I value his service and value the war effort, but this war is not a war for the best interest of Americans.

This war has no purpose and no moral cause. No one in Iraq is "defending our freedom". That's a cruel joke to say that, and a crueler joke to convince a young person that it is true.
Americans do not like and have NEVER liked, to spend the blood of their soldiers, even in "good" wars.
So I think any American who opposes this evil and stupid war in Iraq is doing the country a great deal of good, in that they know the basis for democracy is to love one's country when it is doing the right thing, and to criticize it when it is doing the wrong thing.
I hate to say it, but your friend may die for nothing. If that pisses you off, go scream at Bush, not me. I'm just the messenger.
